Tyra Banks Show to End in 2010

Tyra Banks has announced that The Tyra Show will end in the spring of 2010 after five seasons. The talk show host, former supermodel and media mogul made the announcement via People magazine.

According to the statement:

“This will be the last season of The Tyra Show…I’ve been loving having fun, coming into your living rooms, bedrooms, hair salons for the past 5 years….

“My next huge steps will allow me to reach more women and young girls to help us all feel as fierce as we truly are,” Banks says.

According to People, her next venture, when the Emmy Award winning show concludes in Spring 2010, will be the launch of her New York-based film production company, Bankable Studios, whose mission will be to “bring positive images of women to the big screen.”

Here is the Tyra Banks Nightline video along with recent photos. On September 9, 2009, the former model, talk show host and media mogul discussed a range on topics with Cynthia McFadden on the ABC late night program including her two television programs for which she is known, The Tyra Show and America’s Next Top Model both of which are now on The CW. Additionally, she has just launched an online magazine, Tyra Beauty Inside and Out.

In the wide ranging, and at times contentious interview the two-time Emmy Award winner discussed some of the groundbreaking moments of The Tyra Show, including the new season opener which has already generated discussion as she revealed her real hair, without weaves, wigs or extensions. The “Tyra Banks real hair” scene is shown during the Nightline interview. Regarding which she said:

“Years ago, when I first started wearing hair extensions, I would get mail from young girls, or young girls would come up to me and they would say, ‘Tyra you have the most beautiful hair, like I could never grow hair like that!’ And I would say ‘Child, this is a weave!’ I was like, ‘This ain’t my hair, young girls need to know,’ so now I’m always pulling layers off.

“I’ve showed myself, I’ve showed my cellulite on my talk show, I’ve showed myself with no retouching, and I feel if I show the real raw me, the young girls at home will go, ‘Oh my god, my hair looks like that! My hair’s like Tyra’s and I’m OK, that means I’m OK.’”

Additionally she addressed what might be considered the contradictory messages of the shows, one which intends to educate and empower women and the other, America’s Next Top Model, whose Cycle 13 premieres on September 9, which focuses on physical beauty.

“I don’t think so, because a lot of the time the pretty girl [on "Top Model"] goes home early, or the most photogenic girl goes home early,” Banks said. “One of the big, most underlying messages for me is celebrating beauty that is not typical. … ‘America’s Next Top Model’ is not a bunch of Barbies — it’s a lot of girls that are atypically beautiful.

The Tyra Banks Show went behind the scenes of the Janet Jackson Rock Witchu Tour in Las Vegas on a program broadcast on October 9, 2008. Tyra Banks showed plenty of the behind the scenes footage, giving viewers a detailed view of Janet Jackson’s day to day life, the extensive preparations she and her dancers must make before appearing on stage; everything from costumes and costume changes to dietary choices.

In what is destined to be one of the classic moments on The Tyra Banks Show, Janet allowed Tyra and cameras on a tour of the lavish tour bus and its bedroom where Tyra got “under the covers with Ms. Jackson.” Viewers even get a glimpse of some concert footage. All in all a fascinating look at what makes a Janet Jackson performance such a standout.

Tyra Banks is featured on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Magazine September 2008 issue and in a photo shoot in which she pays homage to aspiring First Lady Michelle Obama. Tyra Banks is profiled in an accompanying article.

When it came to paying homage to Michelle Obama for this story, Banks found the process “surreal.” “It’s kind of embarrassing,” she confesses, “but in my early 20s, I used to want to be a princess. But I didn’t want to have to marry somebody in order to do it! Of course, I don’t see the position of first lady as a princess, where it’s something you have to marry into. With Barack Obama, his becoming president is them becoming president because Michelle was there from the beginning. Without Michelle, he wouldn’t be there.” Or, as she pronounces to her Tyra Banks Show camera after her Oval Office portrait, “Michelle Obama, you’re one hot mama.”

A number of presidential candidates have appeared on Banks’s talk show (Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards), and she’s after Michelle Obama to appear this fall. She has met her before, noting she was “so warm and so gracious. She’s got that direct-eye-contact, truly-connecting thing. She’s not a ‘ha, ha, ha’ type.” She smiles and continues, “And I love that she’s tall.”

“Being first lady is not just about being the wife but really taking command and having true vision,” Banks adds, noting the infinitely tricky terrain of being a woman in politics. “Hillary Clinton was on my show in January, and I asked her, ‘Do you ever just get terrified to say anything? Because everything is so scrutinized and picked apart and dissected?’ And she said, ‘Honestly, Tyra, yes!’ And it’s the same for Michelle Obama, especially with her and Barack being the first, you know, in so, so many ways.”

Banks, 34, in her own way, is a “first” too. Over her 19-year career, in front of both the fashion lens and the television camera, she has variously been anointed a supermodel, a “hero and pioneer,” and, of course, “the new Oprah.” (The New York Times Magazine also recently threw in a comparison to Martha Stewart.) And while she will joke that she got here — the host and executive producer of both America’s Next Top Model and the Emmy-winning The Tyra Banks Show, about to enter its fourth season, and one of Time magazine’s “People Who Shape Our World” — by being, yes, fierce, what’s cool about Banks, who now earns an estimated $23 million a year, is that she was never too cool to be commercial. By doing so, she hasn’t just broken borders — of ethnicity, of cynicism, of fashion cliché — she has broken ground.
