In addition to the organized Obama Colorado Town Hall meeting in Grand Junction, rallies both in opposition of “Obama-care” and in favor are planned in Lincoln Park and in surrounding areas. It is intended that the health care system in place in Grand Junction, Colorado can demonstrate an effective model nationwide, the LA Times notes, quoting the most recently available statistics which Dartmouth University researchers have examined, which indicate that the city’s cost is $5,873 per Medicare patient in 2006. This is approximately 30 percent below the national average. In contrast, the cost per patient in Los Angeles is $10,810. Additionally, the researchers assert that Grand Junction, Colorado has the sixth-least expensive costs in the U.S. Honolulu is the most cost-effective and Miami the most expensive.

It’s a great example for the nation,” said Len Nichols, a healthcare economist at the centrist New America Foundation in Washington, D.C., who co-wrote a paper released this week on the area’s record. “They have managed to contain the natural impulses of excessive competition and the medical arms race. . . . Everybody’s looking into this.”

Some of the controversy in recent days has focused on allegations that the health care reform bill would create “death panels” — perceived as bureaucrats empowered to make decisions as to which elderly or seriously ill patients would live or die. As the Washington Post notes, the basis of the allegation stems is the reaction to a provision in the bill authorizing Medicare reimbursement to patients who sought end-of-life counseling. See the full video, transcript of the President’s health care town hall meeting on August 11, 2009 in Portsmouth, NH at Portsmouth High School. The President addressed questions in the ongoing health care debate and discussions which have drawn strong emotions and protests across the political spectrum on the proposed health insurance reform legislation.

In his remarks, the President said: “So this is what reform is about, for all the chatter and the yelling and the shouting and the noise, you need to know this, If you don’t have health insurance, you will finally have quality affordable options once we pass reform. If you do have health insurance, we will make sure that no insurance company or government bureaucrat gets between you and the care that you need.”

Regarding the nationwide debates which, at times, have become contentious, as photos above reveal, he said: “”I do hope we will talk with each other and not over each other, because one of the objectives of democracy and debate is we start refining our own views. Where we disagree, let’s disagree over things that are real, not these wild misrepresentations that bear no resemblance to what’s been proposed.”

Here is the Obama Town Hall the online town hall meeting on health care issues on July 1, 2009, with photos and transcript. President Barack Obama held the online health care town hall meeting starting at 1:15 pm. ET. at Northern Virginia Community College, in Annandale, Virginia. See the full video, transcript and pictures here. Questions were taken via live audience, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

The President addressed a range of questions regarding health care before a live audience of approximately 200 people in the northern Virginia town. They were chosen by White House Office of Public Engagement and the Northern Virginia Community College. Numbering among the audience were students, professors, administrative staff and citizens of the town.

According to the Washington Post, White House selected Annandale, Virginia because it typifies parts of the U.S. where people are trying to cope with rising health care costs.

According to statistics provided by the administration, family health care premiums in Virginia have increased by 99 percent since 2000, leading nearly a quarter of middle-class Virginians to pay about 10 percent of their income on health care costs.
