In an interview with moderator David Gregory, the Vice President addressed a range of issues including terrorism, national security, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also responded to criticisms of the Obama administration from former VP Dick Cheney during the exchanged taped on Sat. Feb. 13 via satellite from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

In the discussion of Cheney’s remarks, David Gregory said: “Let me ask you about some of the criticism that’s been leveled at this Administration by former Vice President Dick Cheney. He has argued that this Administration has failed to treat the fight against terrorists as war. He cites the decision related to Khalid Sheik Muhammad to offer him a civilian trail as one example. Giving the Christmas Day Bomber the privileges of the American criminal justice system is another example. The decision to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison. What do you say?

Vice President Joe Biden said: “Let me choose my words carefully here. Dick Cheney’s a fine fellow. He’s entitled to his own opinion. He’s not entitled to rewrite history. He’s not entitled to his own facts. The Christmas Day Bomber was treated the exact way that he suggested that the Shoe Bomber was treated. Absolutely the same way. Under the Bush Administration there were three trials in military courts. Two of those people are now walking the streets. They are free.”

The accomplished and appealing young reporter lands an interview with Biden and asks him, “What a does a VP do?”

Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Senator Joe Biden made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on October 20, 2008. “Can I call you Joe?” Ellen DeGeneres asked, mimicking Republican VP candidate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin in the Vice Presidential debate, as the two candidates met for the first time on debate night. “Yeah, as long as you wink at me,” Biden replied.

Speaking about becoming Democratic Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama’s VP running mate, Biden conceded that he had not wanted to be VP but welcomed the “incredible opportunity” to serve with Obama whom he said had the potential to “become a transformative figure in American politics” and would make a great President.

Biden’s conversation with Ellen included much of his rhetoric from the stump. As he has done repeatedly in recent weeks, he reiterated his disappointment with the campaign tactics of his Senate colleague Sen. John McCain, calling recent robo-calls “over the top” and “out of character”.

Biden also hit out at Plain for turning down an offer for a second vice presidential debate.

“Gov. Palin said she’d like to debate me more,” Biden said. “Coincidentally, we’d been asked by a national police group if we’d each appear in a debate and I agreed to do that and she decided not to do that.”

Biden also told DeGeneres, who recently married actress Portia de Rossi, that he opposed Proposition 8, an amendment on California’s November ballot which would amend the state constitution to define marriage as solely between one man and one woman.

“If I lived in California, I’d clearly vote against Prop 8,” Biden said.

After the interview, Biden took part in throwing balls at a dunk tank with actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus to raise money for support of breast cancer research.

Sarah Palin expressed her opposition to Roe v. Wade.

Couric Why, in your view, is Roe v. Wade a bad decision?

Sarah Palin: I think it should be a states’ issue not a federal government-mandated, mandating yes or no on such an important issue. I’m, in that sense, a federalist, where I believe that states should have more say in the laws of their lands and individual areas. Now, foundationally, also, though, it’s no secret that I’m pro-life that I believe in a culture of life is very important for this country. Personally that’s what I would like to see, um, further embraced by America.

However, Sarah Palin notably could not recall any other Supreme Court cases.

Couric: What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?

Palin: Well, let’s see. There’s, of course in the great history of America there have been rulings, that’s never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but …

Couric: Can you think of any?

Palin: Well, I could think of … any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But, you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a vice president, if I’m so privileged to serve, wouldn’t be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.

ABC Political Radar cites Supreme Court cases Sarah Palin should have been familiar with.

The vice presidential candidate seemed to have forgotten that three months ago she criticized the courts ruling in Exxon Shipping v. Baker which gutted a damages award after the 1989 oil spill. At the time she released a statement saying,

“While the decision brings some degree of closure to Alaskans suffering from 19 years of litigation and delay, the Court gutted the jury’s decision on punitive damages.“

Palin also failed to mention some cases recently decided which have troubled her running mate, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. For instance last term, the court overturned a Louisiana law allowing the death penalty for someone who rapes but does not kill a child. McCain said the decision was “an assault on law enforcement efforts to punish these heinous felons.”

Joe Biden expressed support of Roe v. Wade and was able to cite a Supreme Court case he disagreed with.

Katie Couric: Why do you think Roe v. Wade was a good decision?

Joe Biden: Because it’s as close to a consensus that can exist in a society as heterogeneous as ours. What does it say? It says in the first three months that decision should be left to the woman. And the second three months, where Roe v. Wade says, well then the state, the government has a role, along with the women’s health, they have a right to have some impact on that. And the third three months they say the weight of the government’s input is on the fetus being carried.

Couric: Are there Supreme Court decisions you disagree with?

Biden: You know, I’m the guy who wrote the Violence Against Women Act. And I said that every woman in America, if they are beaten and abused by a man, should be able to take that person to court – meaning you should be able to go to federal court and sue in federal court the man who abused you if you can prove that abuse. But they said, “No, that a woman, there’s no federal jurisdiction.” And I held, they acknowledged, I held about 1,000 hours of hearings proving that there’s an effect in interstate commerce.
Women who are abused and beaten and beaten are women who are not able to be in the work force. And the Supreme Court said, “Well, there is an impact on commerce, but this is federalizing a private crime and we’re not going to allow it.” I think the Supreme Court was wrong about that decision.

Democratic Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama and his Vice Presidential running mate Senator Joe Biden held their first joint interview on 60 Minutes, broadcast on August 31, 2008.

The candidates discussed a range of topics with Steve Kroft, including Barack Obama’s historic candidacy, the role that Joe Biden would have in an Obama administration, Joe Biden’s previous failed Presidential campaigns and what he has learned from them, and reactions to presumptive Republican Presidential candidate Senator John McCain’s recent, historic selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate.

60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft conducted the first joint interview with the candidate and his running mate, Senator Joe Biden of Delaware, this past Friday, Aug. 29, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

We began our conversation with the new Democratic candidates backstage just moments after the most improbable nominee had given the most important speech of his young career.

Asked if he ever doubted it was going to happen, Sen. Obama told Kroft, “Of course.”

When?

“Well, let’s see. About a year ago we were down 30 in Iowa. But I never doubted that it could happen. I never doubted that if we were able to mobilize the energy that you saw in that stadium,” Obama said. “All across the country.”

“I knew it was gonna happen before he did. I was running like the devil. I watched. I thought I was pretty good, but I watched. I watched. This guy just sort of grabbed the lightening, ya know, just grabbed it. And you could tell, Barack, I tell ya, my team knew, I knew in August,” Sen. Biden told Kroft.

“We were doing okay. But this is exciting,” Obama remarked.

“Were you surprised to be up here?” Kroft asked Biden.

“I was surprised, I’m truly honored to be up here. I’m a great admirer, we’re friends and we fit,” Biden said.

She seems to have a compelling life story. Obviously, she’s a fine mother and an up-and-coming public servant. My sense is that she subscribes to John McCain’s agenda.”

“She’s a life-long member of the NRA. She’s a hunter. Her husband’s a member of the United Steel Worker Union. Blue collar guy. Got a son on the way to Iraq. It seems like just the kind of person who would appeal to voters in states that you absolutely have to win,” Kroft remarked. “And they have to win.”

“Well, look, I am happy if this ends up being a referendum on what’s going to be good for blue collar workers,” Obama said. “I’ll put my guy, Joe Biden, up against anybody when it comes to fighting on behalf of those families, because he’s been there. He comes out of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He’s been fightin’ for those folks ever since he got into the Senate. And he hasn’t stopped. And he hasn’t forgotten where he’s come from.”

“Let me tell you the reason I picked Joe Biden. Number one, he can step in and become president. And I don’t think anybody has any doubt about that,” Obama said.

“Number two is that if I’m in the room making the kinds of tough decisions that the next president’s gonna have to make, both on domestic policy and on international policy, then I want the counsel and advice of somebody who’s not gonna agree with me a 100 percent of [the] time. In fact, somebody who’s independent enough that can push back and give me different perspectives and make sure that I’m catching any blind spots that I have. And Joe Biden doesn’t bite his tongue,” he continued.

Asked what he’s learned about politics and running for office in those 20 years, Biden said, “I made a mistake. I made a mistake 20, 21, 22 years ago. I was arrogant. I didn’t think I had to prepare. I showed up at the debate and I failed to quote somebody. A guy named Neil Kinnock. And I just ask people and everyone else, look at the last 20 years of my career since that allegation occurred.”

“But, I think that I have a record that people can go back and examine and decide whether or not I mean what I say. No matter how I say it whether I’m consistent with what I’ve asserted I care about. That’s all I care about. But, you know, there’s gonna be a lot, I’m sure a lot of things said about it,” he added.
