Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood graces the cover of Esquire Magazine Eighth Annual Meaning of Life Issue January 2009, and is featured in a photo shoot and interview. See the cover, photos and recent video here.

The special issue has 50 interviews with both public figures and unknown citizens from a diversity of fields from politics to entertainment, one from each state of the U.S.A., sharing thoughts on the topic, “What I’ve Learned.” Eastwood represents the state of California. Other famous interviewees include Wesley Clark, Eminem, Evander Holyfield, Paris Hilton, Bob Newhart, Brent Scowcroft, Gus Van Sant, Charles Koch and Toby Keith.

Here are some excerpts from the Clint Eastwood interview.

I kind of had a feeling “Make my day” would resonate, based upon “Do you feel lucky, punk?” in the first movie. I thought that Smith & Wesson line might hang in there, too. But “Make my day” was just so simple.

I still get it a lot.

As you get older, you’re not afraid of doubt. Doubt isn’t running the show. You take out all the self-agonizing.

What can they do to you after you get into your seventies? [...]

You wonder sometimes. What will we do if something really big happens? Look how fast–seven years–people have been able to forget 9/11. Maybe you remember if you lost a relative or a loved one. But the public can get pretty blasé about stuff like that. Nobody got blasé about Pearl Harbor.

I remember buying a very old hotel in Carmel. I went into an upper attic room and saw that all the windows were painted black. “What was going on here?” I asked the prior owners. They said they thought the Japanese were off the coast during the war.

Barack Obama was unimaginable back when I was a kid. Count Basie and a lot of big bands would come through Seattle when I was young. They could play at a club, but they couldn’t frequent the place. [...]

Million Dollar Baby won the Academy Award. That was nice, that was great. But you don’t dwell on it. An awful lot of good pictures haven’t won Academy Awards, so it doesn’t have much bearing. Letters from Iwo Jima was nominated for an Academy Award. We didn’t win it, but that picture was still as good as I could do it. Did it deserve it less than some other picture? No, not really. But there are other aspects that come into it. In the end, you’ve just got to be happy with what you’ve done. There you are.

Clint Eastwood has won five Academy Awards; two for Best Director, two for Best Picture, and, in 1995, he won the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award His most recent movie, Gran Torino, the 29th movie he has directed, opened in limited release on December 17, 2008.

There is strong Oscar buzz for the movie which marks his first onscreen appearance since the Oscar nominated Million Dollar Baby. He portrays Walt Kowalski, a widowed Korean War veteran deeply prejudiced against Asians whose prize possession, a 1972 Ford Gran Torino is coveted by local gang members in his Detroit neighborhood. Despite prejudice, he befriends the son of his Hmong immigrant neighbors in hopes of steering him away from joining the gang.

Halle Berry Esquire Magazine November 2008 Cover, Photos Sexiest Woman Alive 2008

Oscar winning actress Halle Berry has been selected by Esquire Magazine as “Sexiest Woman Alive 2008.” She graces the cover of the November 2008 issue, is featured in a photo spread and she wrote the cover story article. The cover parodies the former U.S. President Bill Clinton Esquire Magazine cover from 2000.

“Well, I don’t know exactly what it means but being 42 and having just had a baby, I think I’ll take it,” Berry wrote.

Esquire said it dressed Berry in a racier version of Clinton’s suit jacket and blue tie to recreate an iconic cover for its 75th anniversary celebration.

Berry starred last year in the movie “Things We Lost in the Fire” and is due to star next year in “Frankie and Alice,” a film about a woman with multiple personality disorder.

In the Esquire article, Berry describes things she finds sexy. It turns out that spaghetti and wine are major turn-ons.

“Sexy is not about wearing sexy clothes or shaking your booty until you damn near get hip dysplasia; it’s about knowing that sexiness is a state of mind — a comfortable state of being,” she said.

Berry won an Oscar in 2002 for her role in the movie “Monster’s Ball.” She played the wife of an executed murderer who becomes romantically involved with a guard at the prison where her husband had been held.

Actress Paula Patton is featured in a photo shoot and article in the August 2008 issue of Esquire Magazine. Paula Patton co-stars with Kevin Costner in the upcoming movie, “Swing Vote,” in theaters August 1, 2008. She is co-starring in “Mirrors” with Kiefer Sutherland, to be released August 15, 2008, and starring in “This Wednesday,” which will be released later this year.

Before landing a co-starring role alongside Denzel Washington in the 2006 movie “Déjà Vu,” Paula Patton had appeared in minor roles in “Hitch” (2005) starring Will Smith, and the 2006 musical “Idlewild.” Paula Patton is married to Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Robin Thicke.

ESQ: You’ve filmed three movies in the past year. In Mirrors, the newest one, you play a coroner, a job that would seem to require a personality darker than yours.

PP: You only see me doing coroner work for like a minute. But I realized that what we do as professions affects how we act as people, big-time. So I went down to the L.A. County Coroner’s Office and I got to see people dissecting bodies. At first the coroner said, “No, I’m not different than most people.” But then he said, “Well, actually, I don’t have road rage.” And he listed all these other things he doesn’t do, because he’s seen so much senseless death that he knows there’s no reason to honk your horn or yell at someone. If you scream, “Hey, I’m walkin’ here!” at the wrong guy, he could kill you.

ESQ: Will any great art come out of these troubling times we’re in?

PP: It can. I think movies do it better than any other form. A movie is painting, it’s photography, it’s literature — because you have to have the screenplay — it’s music. Put a different soundtrack to a comedy and it’s a tragedy. A movie combines all those forms and forces you to pay attention for two hours with a group of people. And people aren’t as well-read anymore, so we share a common knowledge through movies. I’m rambling now. I’m not going to talk anymore.

ESQ: But it’s an interview.

PP: This stuff will go really well with the bra-and-underwear photos.

ESQ: Exactly!

PP: No, I’m not doing bra and underwear.

ESQ: Then what are you doing?

PP: Not bra and underwear. I have to draw the line.
