In an interview with MTV News earlier this year, the Jonas Brothers expressed their interest in collaborating with a rapper, singling out Chicago rapper Common as one of their first choices.

“There’s a song we wrote recently and we were thinking … it does sound different and kind of strange, and [we'd like to work with] a rapper who has some real meaningful lyrics,” Nick, the self-proclaimed “most hip-hop” Jonas, told MTV News. “[Someone who] has some real depth to what he’s saying — someone like a Common or a Lupe Fiasco or a Mos Def. Someone who takes more of a spoken-word approach. That’d be really cool.”

Kevin said that they definitely appreciate hip-hop, hinting that adding that type of vibe to the album is definitely a possibility. “We have a hip-hop bone in us somewhere,” Joe added.

Jonas Brothers Don’t Charge Me for the Crime was written collectively by the band along with, Ryan Liestman. The track and the album in its entirety was produced by John Fields.

Lines, Vines, and Trying Times will be released internationally on June 16, 2009, and shortly thereafter, the band embarks on the Jonas Brothers World Tour which kicks off on June 20, 2009 in Dallas, Texas with supporting acts Jordin Sparks, Honor Society and Wonder Girls.

Here is the Common Tavis Smiley interview video. The Grammy Award winning rapper and actor Common appeared on The Tavis Smiley Show on May 20, 2009 and discussed his role in the highly anticipated forthcoming movie Terminator Salvation directed by McG and starring Christian Bale as John Connor which will be released in theaters May 22, 2009. In the movie, Common portrays Barnes, who works alongside protagonist Connor to save humankind.

The Chicago born rapper Common also discussed his eighth studio album, Universal Mind Control, and the directions his music is taking. In addition to the acclaim the Grammy Award winner has received as a rapper, beginning with his first major label album, Like Water for Chocolate, he has also won acclaim as an actor. He has appeared in Smokin’ Aces, Street Kings, American Gangster, and Wanted.

In a recent interview, Common discussed his role in the highly anticipated Terminator Salvation.

“My character, Barnes, is part of the resistance. He’s like a spiritual revolutionary soldier. When you think of Malcolm X or when you think of Martin Luther King, they fought in certain ways. Malcolm X definitely had the warrior in him. He was down for the spiritual fight, too. I look at my character as someone who’s down for the spiritual fight and is a warrior.”

Common ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Video ‘Universal Mind Control’ Performance 12-09-08

Grammy Award winning rapper and actor Common performed “Universal Mind Control” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on December 9, 2008. It’s the title track and lead single of his eighth studio album released that same day. The Neptunes produced the single which features Pharrell Williams. Hype Williams directed music video which premiered in October 2008 and can be seen on YouTube.

Common will appear in the highly anticipated movie Terminator Salvation which stars Christian Bale and will be released in theaters May 22, 2009. In a recent interview, Common discussed the movie as well as his new album.

“We’re both part of the resistance,” said Com, who plays the best friend to Bale’s John Connor. “The resistance is fighting the machines. … You got a black dude fighting on the good side to save humanity. It shows the progress we wanna make in the world. We see what Barack is doing to raise the consciousness of all people. Then to see different things happen in the entertainment world, it’s beautiful.” [...]

Regarding the album.

Instead of Kanye West producing most of the LP, Common went with Mr. DJ (Outkast) and the Neptunes.

“I felt that I made the change because it came real natural,” he said. “I was talking to Pharrell about working, and we went into the studio — me, him and Chad [Hugo]. When I make albums, I like to focus on maybe one or two producers. Pharrell, we both was making that magic. I was like, ‘Let’s keep going.’ “

Grammy Award winning rapper and actor Common performed the title track from his eighth studio album Universal Mind Control on Tonight Show with Jay Leno on December 4, 2008. The album will be released on December 9, 2008.

The single was produced by The Neptunes and features Pharrell Williams. The official music video, directed by Hype Williams, was released in October 2008 and can be seen on YouTube.

First single “Universal Mind Control (UMC),” featuring Williams, plucks its rhythm from Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock” as Common rhymes about “booties dropping … styling and being fly.”

“I wanted to do what I felt was missing from my catalog — songs that could be played at parties internationally,” Common says. “I just came off tour with N*E*R*D, and crowds really felt ‘Universal Mind Control (UMC).’” [...]

Beyond his music, the rapper continues to be busy with film work. He has acted alongside Jeremy Piven in “Smokin’ Aces,” Denzel Washington in “American Gangster” and Angelina Jolie in “Wanted,” and will play the character Barnes in the 2009 action film “Terminator Salvation.”

Having achieved Hollywood success, Common knows he can take artistic chances with his music in a way few other rappers can. “A brother isn’t just relying on hip-hop to pay my bills anymore,” he says.
