Leonard Nimoy is the originator of the iconic Spock character on the original Star Trek series which has become a part of pop culture. He reprises his role as Mr. Spock in the new J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movie. The highly anticipated movie was released in U.S. theaters on May 8, 2009. He is the only original cast member to appear in the movie, reprising his role as the iconic Mr. Spock.

The new movie is a prequel chronicling events of the lives of the iconic Star Trek characters when they were in Star Fleet Academy on Planet Earth, in San Francisco. James T. Kirk is portrayed by Chris Pine; Zachary Quinto portrays the young Spock. Rounding out the cast are Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Simon Pegg as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. The movie’s villain, Nero, a Romulan commander, is portrayed by Eric Bana. The movie has received critical acclaim; for instance, see: Star Trek Review

Sitting alongside all of The View cohosts — Barbara Walters, Whoopie Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd — Leonard Nimoy said returning to Star Trek after 18 years “was like slipping into a warm bath.”

Regarding the J.J. Abrams movie, he said, “It’s a very, very big movie, in scale and scope and size.” He also noted that there is “personal, touching, emotional stuff” as well.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck asked What advice he might have given the actor Zachary Quinto who plays Spock in the prequel. Leonard Nimoy on The View said the he was an “”Extremely intelligent actor. Very well trained.” He noted that “here is an intelligence working” which he said he considered essential to the character.

Whoopie Goldberg asked him if he thought Gene Roddenbery would be happy with the new movie. Nimoy said he thought he would and added that Roddenbery told him it would be exciting to see someone else’s vision of the series.

Regarding J.J. Abrams, he said he was a “Great director, wonderful director” who had a “wonderful vehicle.” He said, “It’s like coming home.”

Joy Behar noted that Star Trek fans include President Barack Obama and Angelina Jolie. Leonard Nimoy said he met Obama before he became president, three years ago. He saw him at a luncheon in Los Angeles. He says that Obama gave him the Vulcan greeting as he approached him.

Leonard Nimoy’s wife Susan Nimoy was present in the audience; the couple has been married for twenty years. When asked if he were like Spock at home, Susan Nimoy nodded and said, “I’m devoted to making him scream, too.”

Whoopie Goldberg asked him about his book of photography, The Full Body Project, which was released in 2007; the book is comprised of photographs of large women, photographed without clothing. New Star Trek movie posters have been revealed for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. See the new movie posters and set photos and video here from the highly anticipated movie which will be released in theaters on May 8, 2009.

Leonard Nimoy is the only original cast member to appear in the movie. The legendary actor, director and photographer is making a highly anticipated cameo appearance as the legendary Mr. Spock. He was seen in the final seconds of the movie’s first theatrical trailer, released in November 2008, delivering the iconic Vulcan greeting, “Live long and prosper.” (See: Star Trek 2009 Theatrical Trailer.)

In related news, director J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robots Prods company, has extended its deal with Paramount through 2013.

Abrams and longtime producing partner Bryan Burk set the company at Paramount in July 2006.

Bad Robot’s first release was “Cloverfield,” which grossed $170 million worldwide. “Star Trek” is the company’s second film; Bad Robot begins production in June on Harrison Ford-Rachel McAdams starrer “Morning Glory,” to be directed by Roger Michell for release in 2010.

A new Star Trek TV spot was released for for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek on March 23, 2009. See the TV spot and photos here. The highly anticipated movie which is a prequel of previous movies in the Star Trek series, will be released in theaters on May 8, 2009.

The new TV spot reveals previously unseen footage and, as with each prior glimpse of the forthcoming movie, it builds anticipation of the character development, the movie’s premise promises, showing us the young James T. Kirk, portrayed by Chris Pine, and the early life experiences which have influenced him. In the most recent theatrical trailer, we learned more about his father’s heroism as a starship captain, saving the lives of several hundred of his crew, including the infant Kirk.

The movie follows the early days of the familiar Star Trek crew as they attend Star Fleet Academy, located on Planet Earth, in San Francisco. Zachary Quinto portrays the young Spock. Rounding out the cast are Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Simon Pegg as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. A new theatrical trailer for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek has been released. See the trailer and photos here. The highly anticipated prequel of the Star Trek universe, will be released in theaters on May 8, 2009.

The mesmerizing new trailer (which is attached to The Watchmen, which opened on March 6, 2009) builds excitement and anticipation for the movie with its focus on the young James T. Kirk, portrayed by Chris Pine, showing us what early life events shaped his character. We learn more about his father’s heroism as a starship captain, saving the lives of several hundred of his crew, including the infant Kirk.

In a recent interview, director J.J. Abrams talked about the importance of maintaining the integrity of the characters and the iconic hallmarks of Star Trek.

The characters was the most important thing in it. We needed to be true to the spirit of those characters. There were certain iconic things — if you’re going to do “Star Trek,” you’ve got to do the Enterprise and it has to look like the Enterprise. If you’re going to do “Star Trek” you have to do costumes that feel like the costumes people know. You have to be able to glance at it and know what that is. Even the text, the font of “Star Trek” has to look like what you know.

The phasers, the communicators, the Starfleet logo — there are all these things that are the touchstones, the tenets of what makes “Star Trek” “Star Trek.” If you’re going to do this series those are things you don’t mess with. And yet, they need to withstand a resolution that “Star Trek” has never had to withstand before. And I don’t just mean IMAX — though it will have to work there too — but what I mean is that audiences are so savvy now and they’ve seen every iteration of “Star Trek,” “Star Wars,” two separate versions of “Battlestar Galactica,” they’ve seen “Alien” and “Aliens,” they’ve seen countless science fiction movies. They’ve seen it all. And even worse, they’ve seen a movie as “Galaxy Quest” that completely mocks the paradigm in its entirety. [...]

JJA: The trick is how do you use a ship like that, uniforms like that, characters who look like that and the name “Star Trek” and make it feel relevant and legitimate. the challenge is to take the familiar — for better or worse — and embrace the elements that make it unique but be sure the master you’re serving is the making of the most entertaining movie possible. You can’t look backward and try to make sure that every decision you’re making is true to the past. that’s not to say that we weren’t true to the past, but that wasn’t our guiding principle.

Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009 has seen the debut of several movie trailers. This time around, in a mere 30 seconds, we get a glimpse of mostly new footage of the highly anticipated prequel of the Star Trek universe, which will be released in theaters on May 8, 2009.

Geoff Boucher of Hero Complex/LA Times recently interviewed director J.J. Abrams. The entire two-part interview is online. Here is an excerpt.

I have to say that the place where I could not be more grateful or amazed, is with the cast. To go into a movie like this where you are casting these iconic characters who were played by actors who defined them and created them — certainly as much as Roddenberry did –the odds of finding the right people to fill those shoes are very small. And having all of the people you cast actually work out is even smaller. I feel like we managed the impossible by finding actors who are so committed to their roles and so are all so right and funny and real and emotional and complicated but yet still familiar. They are the characters from the show and yet no one is doing an imitation of one of the former actors.

The reason that it works — or the reason I believe it is working — is that I and people who have seen it have walked away feeling that these are the characters. There’s a transition that happens. It’s a weird thing. it’s not that you will ever forget what DeForest Kelley did or George Takei or Shatner or any of them. It’s almost though as if another door opens and you’re letting in something else into a space that was sacred. It doesn’t diminish what was before, it doesn’t lessen the quality or impact of what was. It’s like when you look at James Bond. There are people out there that feel that Daniel Craig is it. And then there are people who say, “Oh my God, Roger Moore, that’s the only James Bond who will ever work,” and people who think Sean Connery is clearly the one true Bond. The thing is, what Craig is doing now doesn’t undermine what those other actors did. They can coexist.

First Look: Star Trek 2009 Movie Posters Uhura, Nero Character Posters

Here are two new official character posters, Uhura and Nero, for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek . See both posters and video of the Star Trek Exclusive spot from MySpace here. Zoe Saldana portrays Uhura, the role Nichelle Nichols made famous in the original Star Trek TV series. Eric Bana portrays the Klingon villain Nero. The movie will be released in theaters in May 8, 2009. The movie’s official Web site — StarTrekMovie.com — has wallpaper versions of these posters.

In an interview at a recent press screening of four scenes from the movie, director J.J. Abrams discussed his intentions in this highly anticipated prequel.

“I didn’t jump at directing this movie like a true Trekkie — I was obsessed with Twilight Zone,” Abrams told the crowd of fanboys, media types and studio employees. “But then I got the script from Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, which was adventure and funny and romantic and sexy and epic yet intimate — everything you’d want.”

Setting up the first clip, which featured Kirk as an Iowa malcontent, Abrams explained: “Part of the goal here was to legitimize this idea of space travel. Star Wars, which I love, takes place ‘a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.’ But Star Trek is us. We needed it to feel earthbound as well.”
