The memoir which chronicles her marriage to her husband, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, whom she is divorcing in the aftermath of the public revelation in June 2009 of his affair with Argentine mistress Maria Belen Shapur, which followed his four-day disappearance during which he initially claimed to be on the Appalachian trail. During the interview, she answered questions about her decision to divorce, and noted that she remains on good terms with Sanford saying, “We have both chosen to be as pleasant with one another as we can going forward. We don’t need the children to see us fighting.” She said she had no plans to go into politics: “No, I think I’ve done my time.”

During the interview she discussed a range of topics, including how the affair has impacted the couple’s four sons (whom she said Googled her husband’s mistress when they found out), her decision to file for divorce (“I wasn’t thinking of anything other than what was the right thing to do for me and my family”), and how she initially dealt with her husband balked at the fidelity commitment in the marriage vow.

“He said, ‘I just have some nagging doubt about if I can be faithful for my entire life,’” she said. “I said, ‘Maybe we should call off the wedding because that’s what marriage is, a vow of fidelity.’”

Sex and the Political Wife.” She discussed her new book, “Staying True,” a memoir chronicling her marriage to husband, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford whose affair with his Argentine mistress Maria Belen Shapur became publicly known when he disappeared for four days in June 2009, initially claiming to be on the Appalachian trail. Jenny Sanford, a graduate of Georgetown University and formerly an investment banker at Lazard Freres, was married to Sanford for 20 years; she filed for divorce in December 2009, having moved out of the governor’s mansion with their four sons in August.

During the interview with Barbara Walters she discussed the memoir, “Staying True,” (published Feb. 5, 2010 by Ballantine Books) she has written of her marriage, her discovery of her husband’s affair, which was months before the public revelation through his disappearance and the subsequent press conference in June 2009. She revealed that the infamous Mark Sanford emails published by The State newspaper in South Carolina, revealing an intimate correspondence with his mistress, were instrumental in her decision to divorce.

Both Young and his wife discussed their decision to help former Senator John Edwards conceal Rielle Hunter’s pregnancy and Young’s decision to claim paternity of the child at his request. Both cited concern for Edwards’ wife Elizabeth Edwards whose cancer had reoccurred and noted that they had 12 hours to make a decision. Young conceded, “We are admitting it was crazy, it was wrong,” while addressing the co-hosts’ questions on the circumstances and the impact on their family, their marriage, as well as the larger issue of the cover-up and resultant fall-out.

Here is the Andrew Young Good Morning video of his Feb. 1, 2010 interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. It was a live television follow-up to the previous ABC 20/20 interview, discussing detailed revelations in his new book ‘The Politician’ about John Edwards’ affair with former mistress Rielle Hunter and subsequent cover-up and scandal during the 2008 Presidential campaign. In the interview, Young remarked about the tape, which Rielle Hunter has sued for its return, saying: “I think it’s a shame people are focusing on this. I couldn’t have told this story without including the sex tape. We’ve been offered gigantic amounts of money. And we’ve said no.”

He also said he feared for his family’s safety during the midst of the cover-up of the Edwards’ affair:

“For several months, I used to get up at 3 a.m. and walk around the house with a baseball bat and a knife,” he said. During that time, Young said he had his three young children sleep with him and his wife.

That fear, he said, peaked during a car ride “out in the middle of nowhere” with Edwards. During that ride, “all I could think about was Vince Foster,” Young said, referring to the former aide to President Clinton who committed suicide in a Washington, D.C., park.

Here is the Andrew Young 20/20 video of his Jan. 29, 2010 interview with ABC News’ Bob Woodruff. He discussed his new tell-all book, ‘The Politician’ which reveals details on the John Edwards’ affair with mistress Rielle Hunter during the 2008 Presidential campaign and the resulting cover-up and scandal. In the interview, conducted with both Young and his wife, Cheri Young, he talked about the affair the candidate had had with Rielle Hunter, (variously known as Lisa Jo Druck, Lisa Hunter, Lisa Jo Hunter, and Rielle Jaya James Druck); how it had begun and how the cover-up began once she became pregnant. Noting how much money was spent to conceal Rielle Hunter and her child, he said:

“I know of at least a million dollars. And there was much, much more,” said Andrew Young of the scheme that brought him to testify in front of a grand jury. “We were living in mansions, flying around in jets. … Money was no object.”

The Iowa caucuses were just two weeks away in December 2007, when Young falsely claimed he was the father of his boss’s love child.

“We knew we were going to have to leave town as soon as this hit the Enquirer,” Young recalled of the bombshell that broke in the supermarket tabloid the National Enquirer.
