Here is the debut single from season 8 American Idol finalist Danny Gokey, It’s Only, lyrics, video and radio interview. The song debuted on Nov. 6, 2009 on Milwaukee country radio station, FM106.1. Here the song in its entirety along with the interview he gave during the premiere of the song.

In other news, the season 8 finalist recently performed at a media event marking the 15th anniversary of the L.A. Dream Center, which is an outreach organization located in Los Angeles which provides shelter, aid and relief to the needy and the homeless in inner city L.A. and nationwide. The organization’s founder, Matthew Barnett, announced that the L.A. Dream Center Youth Outreach Center will be named after Sophia Gokey, the singer’s late wife who died shortly before his American Idol audition in 2008, in recognition for his work for the organization, via the foundation, Sophia’s Heart, which he founded in memory of his wife. Here is the full Angie Martinez interview with Chris Brown, broadcast Oct. 21, 2009 on New York radio station Hot 97. It was the R&B singer-songwriter’s first radio interview since the domestic violence incident with former girlfriend pop star Rihanna, which resulted in his felony conviction.

He addressed a range of topics surrounding the domestic violence incident in February 2009, addressed the controversy over his Larry King interview earlier this year (noting that he was wearing a bow tie, just as he did for that interview). He also addressed rumors regarding Jay-Z, denying that there was a conflict. Regarding resuming he career, he conceded that he felt like an “underdog.” Some additional key excerpts via MTV News. Paul Harvey was a legend of broadcast radio. See a video and photo tribute here to the pioneer who with his iconic delivery rich with expressive pauses was a broadcaster for more than 70 years and the most listened to radio commentator in the world, ending his broadcasts with his signature signoff, “Paul Harvey….good day.”

He was an icon and a revered figure, indeed a national treasure who had met every U.S. president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In 2005 President George W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Born in 1918, he was 90 years old at the time of his death in 2009.

“Paul Harvey was the most listened to man in the history of radio,” said Bruce DuMont, president of the Museum of Broadcast Communications and host of the nationally syndicated radio program “Beyond the Beltway.” “There is no one who will ever come close to him.”

Dumont said Harvey had a litmus test for all his stories: Would Aunt Betty care about this? He thought about the interest level of his real Aunt Betty to get away from “highfalutin” foreign affairs discussions to discuss “meat and potato” issues like health care, Dumont said.

Paul Harvey got his start in radio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at age 14 in while still in school. Radio broadcasting has been his sole passion and occupation, which he shared with his wife Lynne Cooper Harvey whom he called Angel. She was his longtime producer (and died in May 2008). Later his son, Paul Harvey, Jr. joined the family’s venture and became producer and writer of ‘The Rest of the Story.’

Harvey never viewed himself as a newsman, even though some 18 million people tuned into his daily reports to hear his 15-minute take on the day’s events.

“I’m a professional parade watcher who can’t wait to get out of bed every morning and rush down to the teletypes to pan for gold,” he told CNN’s Larry King in 1988.

That he did with a vengeance since those teletype days in 1951, arriving at his Chicago studio in the pre-dawn hours to produce two news and commentary segments and his evening The Rest of the Story (written by his son, Paul) which were carried on some 1,100 radio stations and 400 Armed Forces Radio Network stations.

Harvey lived in River Forest, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He had a 16th floor studio above a street sign that said Paul Harvey Drive.

In 2001, when he was 81 years old, Paul Harvey famously signed a $100 million 10-year contract with ABC Radio Networks, the network he had been with for his entire career. The stalwart Harvey nearly fulfilled the contract.

He was also a noted pitchman, with a one-of-a-kind delivery of commercial spots that he wove seamlessly into his radio broadcasts, with companies clamoring for the very limited ads and sponsorships.

“I can’t look down on the commercial sponsors of these broadcasts,” he told CBS in 1988. “Too often they have very, very important messages to put across. Without advertising in this country, my goodness, we’d still be in this country what Russia mostly still is: a nation of bearded cyclists with b.o.”

The idea of retirement never occurred to either Harvey or his wife, Angel, whom he married in 1940 and who was his producing partner throughout his career.

“I’ve got an old country boy’s philosophy,” he told The Chicago Tribune in a 2002 interview. “When the car’s running, you don’t look inside the carburetor. Just keep rolling.”

President Barack Obama delivered his weekly address on February 14, 2009 via radio and YouTube. See the video and recent photos of Obama during the past week.

Both houses of Congress passed the $787 billion economic stimulus bill, and the President characterized it as as a “major milestone on our road to recovery.” He said the bill (officially known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act), is designed “save or create more than 3.5 million jobs over the next two years, ignite spending by business and consumers alike.”

He reiterated that this is just the beginning. Jobs created, he said, will address modernization of the health care system, upgrading classrooms labs and libraries in public schools. Other jobs are to improve the nation’s infrastructure by “building wind turbines and solar panels and the smart grid necessary to transport the clean energy they create; and laying broadband internet lines to connect rural homes, schools, and businesses to the information superhighway.”

In addressing skepticism, he again made mention of the previously announced Web site — Recovery.gov — which will enable the American public to see where and how the money is spent. “Ultimately, this is your money, and you deserve to know where it’s going and how it’s spent,” he said.

In closing, President Obama quoted the words of President John F. Kennedy: “Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks.”

The costliest item in the stimulus package is a $400 tax credit for individuals earning less than $75,000 a year and $800 for couples with income of less than $150,000.

Infrastructure construction makes up a big portion of the spending, including $29 billion for highways, $17.7 billion for mass transit and rail and $18.8 billion for clean water and flood control projects.

The plan provides $87 billion for Medicaid, the health insurance program for the poor. It contains $39 billion for unemployed workers in families, including provisions extending jobless benefits for 20 additional weeks in most states and 33 additional weeks in states with high unemployment rates. It also increases weekly benefits by $25.

Obama plans to unveil more details on his proposals to deal with the housing crisis with a speech Feb. 18 in Arizona, which had the third-highest rate of foreclosures in January — one in 182 housing units — after Nevada and California.

President Barack Obama delivered his weekly address on February 7, 2009 via radio and YouTube. See the video and recent photos of Obama duing the past week.

The President made note of the latest Labor Department statistics that are indicative of the worsening economic crisis; a reported 598,000 jobs were lost in January 2009, the most jobs lost in a month since 1974. This has pushed the unemployment rate to 7.6 percent, the highest since 1992. Overall, the country has seen the greatest job loss in 12 months since the government began keeping track of these statistics in 1939.

Despite the bad news, the President expressed optimism in light of the compromise reached in the U.S. Senate regarding the stimulus bill. “In the midst of our greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, the American people were hoping that Congress would begin to confront the great challenges we face. That was, after all, what last November’s election was all about,” he said.

He went on to reiterate a longstanding theme of unity, “The American people know that our challenges are great. They don’t expect Democratic solutions or Republican solutions – they expect American solutions,” while stresses that the recovery plan is intended to “put Americans to work doing the work America needs done.” He asserted that the bill “will save or create more than 3 million jobs over the next two years, all across the country – 16,000 in Maine, nearly 80,000 in Indiana – almost all of them in the private sector, and all of them jobs that help us recover today, and prosper tomorrow.”

After much wrangling the compromise was reached last night.

The bipartisan deal was cut after two days of talks and would cut more than $100 billion from the $920 billion bill, dropping its cost to about $820 billion, if amendments added on the Senate floor are retained.

Most Republicans remained strongly opposed to the compromise bill, saying it was too costly and ineffective, and Democratic leaders were counting on just three GOP votes for the plan as of last night but hoped to expand the number before a final vote.

Moments after Reid announced the deal on the Senate floor, GOP lawmakers said that they will seek to delay a final vote through procedural objections, which could push debate to as late as Monday.

Senators worked late into last night on a time agreement to bring the bill to a vote. The pipeline was still clogged with amendments, many of them offered by conservative Republican senators, with little chance of passing. But Reid was determined to make sure the debate remained open and free-flowing, in keeping with the tone that President Obama urged.

He began by noting there is good news and bad news, the latter being well known, that the economy is worsening and that according to new statistics, the economy shrank by nearly 4 percent in the last quarter of 2008; the largest decline in more than a quarter century, meaning more job loss in January 2009.

He said the good news was that the House had passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan (commonly known as the economic stimulus package), indicating that the government is moving with urgency in light of the economic crisis. Obama said the plan “will save or create more than 3 million jobs over the next few years.” He went on to add, “It puts a tax cut into the pockets of working families, and places a down payment on America’s future by investing in energy independence and education, affordable health care, and American infrastructure.”

Reiterating comments he made during the week in which he called Wall Street bonuses “outrageous,” Obama said, “We learned this week that even as they petitioned for taxpayer assistance, Wall Street firms shamefully paid out nearly $20 billion in bonuses for 2008.” He went on to add, “While I’m committed to doing what it takes to maintain the flow of credit, the American people will not excuse or tolerate such arrogance and greed.”

The President also said that the newly sworn in Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, “will announce a new strategy for reviving our financial system that gets credit flowing to businesses and families. We’ll help lower mortgage costs and extend loans to small businesses so they can create jobs.”

Obama did not offer specifics about the new plan or say when it would be unveiled. His chief spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said on Friday that the White House would hold meetings next week about financial industry regulation.

Republicans, who opposed the president’s stimulus package of over $800 billion largely because of its spending priorities, suggested mortgage help as well, proposing government-backed 4 percent fixed-rate mortgages for “any credit-worthy borrower,” Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said.

“The availability of these low-interest loans would increase demand for houses significantly and low-interest mortgages would boost household income,” McConnell said in a separate radio address.

In the address, the President reiterated previous addresses in which he has outlined his American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan–commonly known as the economic stimulus package–asserting that despite its high cost it is essential to jump-start the economy as well as to provide for a long-term solution to the steadily worsening economic crisis.

He stressed that the plan is “not just a short-term program to boost employment. It’s one that will invest in our most important priorities like energy and education; health care and a new infrastructure that are necessary to keep us strong and competitive in the 21st century.”

He also reiterated the need to rebuild the infrastructure and double the capacity to generate alternative energy sources, including wind, solar, and biofuels as well as the importance of making the existing structure more energy efficient. Towards that end, he said, “We’ll begin to build a new electricity grid that lay down more than 3,000 miles of transmission lines to convey this new energy from coast to coast. We’ll save taxpayers $2 billion a year by making 75% of federal buildings more energy efficient, and save the average working family $350 on their energy bills by weatherizing 2.5 million homes.”

For the first time as president, Mr. Obama also met with the leaders of both parties in Congress, in keeping with his campaign promise of bipartisanship.’

Yet in a polite but pointed exchange with the No. 2 House Republican, Eric Cantor of Virginia, Mr. Obama took note of the parties’ fundamental differences on tax policy toward low-wage workers, and insisted that his view would prevail.

At issue is Mr. Obama’s proposal that his tax breaks for low- and middle-income workers, including his centerpiece “Making Work Pay” tax credit, be refundable — that is, that the benefits also go to workers who earn too little to pay income taxes but who pay Social Security and Medicare taxes. Republicans generally oppose giving such refunds to people who pay no income taxes.

“We just have a difference here, and I’m president,” Mr. Obama said to Mr. Cantor, according to Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, who was at the meeting.

Mr. Emanuel said that Mr. Obama was being lighthearted and that lawmakers of both parties had laughed.

Mr. Cantor, in an interview later, had a similar recollection. He said the president had told him, “You’re correct, there’s a philosophical difference, but I won, so we’re going to prevail on that.”

“He was very straightforward,” Mr. Cantor added. “There was no disrespect, but it was very matter-of-fact.”

Acknowledging skepticism, Obama said his administration “will launch an unprecedented effort to root out waste, inefficiency, and unnecessary spending in our government, and every American will be able to see how and where we spend taxpayer dollars by going to a new website called recovery.gov.”
