The annual parade, sponsored by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association began 1890 and is also known as “America’s New Year Celebration.”

The theme for this year’s parade is “Making a Difference” and seeks to honor those in the U.S. “who quietly and without desire for reward or recognition, act in selfless, generous and kind ways to aid or benefit others.”

The 2018 Grand Marshal honor Oscar-nominated actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise who rose to fame for his portrayal of war veteran Lt. Dan Taylor in the iconic 1990s movie Forrest Gump, which starred Tom Hanks in the title role. He’s also known for his decades of philanthropic work benefiting veterans, first responders and others in the U.S. via his eponymous Gary Sinise Foundation. You can see the announcement video below.
