The concert marked the first major stadium appearance of the band since they announced their new album ‘Lightning Bolt’ and new single, ‘Mind Your Manners,’ which they performed live. Although the sold-out crowd endured a lengthy two-and-a-half hour delay due to inclement weather — rain and threatening thunderstorms — in total, the band played for approximately three hours. The 32-song setlist included some of their greatest hits as well as new songs — notably the title track of the new album (video above) and ‘Future Days’ (video below) — and some covers, including Van Halen’s ‘Eruption.’
Here’s a review roundup, with photos. See what the critics have to say about the July 19 concert. The set-list and more video highlights follow below.
“The concert began in mugginess, with the kind of slow build typical of Pearl Jam’s longer concerts. Dressed in black, Vedder, Mike McCready, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and Matt Cameron entered with the simmering “Release” and some deep-album tracks, then the wistful “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town.””
“”Do the Evolution” and “Corduroy” — the latter featuring the timely opening line “the waiting drove me mad” — found the band in peak form. Mostly, though, it was when they ventured into controlled chaos on elastic live staples like “Evenflow,” “Rearviewmirror,” and “Porch” that were the occasion’s biggest highlights.”
Consequence of Sound (with photos):
“Even before the lightning struck, though, the surprises kept hitting. Sure, “Release” has become a noteworthy opener in years past, but nobody expected the B-side “Hold On” that early, or even No Code cut “Present Tense”. They only shuffled out seven songs before we huddled away for shelter, but man, there was electricity in the air even before the storm cells made their descent upon the Second City.”
