Video: Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake: ‘Holy Grail’ — more video highlights are below.
The live appearance by the two music superstars marked the start of their highly anticipated summer tour which will have its formal kickoff on July 17 Rihanna was a surprise guest on ‘Run This Town,’ on which she was originally one of the featured artists (along with Kanye West). The two-and-a-half hour show consisted of songs from throughout both artists’ careers as well as their recent albums; Justin Timberlake’s ‘The 20/20 Experience’ and its forthcoming volume 2 of the same title, as well as Jay-Z’s newly released ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ (MCHG) album.
It marked the third night of live performances for the artists who had been guest performers on each other’s solo headline appearances at The Wireless Festival; Justin Timberlake performed on Friday, July 14 and Jay-Z performed the following night, July 13.
Here is a review roundup (with photos); see how the critics reacted. Below the review snippets, the full set list and more video highlights have been posted.
“Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z brought London’s Wireless festival to a rousing close with a spectacular joint set. [...] Opening with their single Holy Grail, their set, which lasted for two-and-a-half hours, was a combination of their solo hits and a mash-up of their popular tracks as well as their collaborations, Suit And Tie and Holy Grail. Timberlake, 32, did double duty, playing the piano and guitar during Jay-Z’s songs.”
“The stripped beats of “Tom Ford” are live dynamite and the roll-call of modern artists in “Picasso Baby” is merely another shorthand signifier of Jay-Z’s wealth.
Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River” and some of the weirder electronic funk provide a sensuous counterpoint to Jay-Z’s beats and bragging.”
