Warren Buffett recently wrote an op-ed for The New York Times, published on November 25, 2012, entitled ‘A Minimum Tax for the Wealthy;’ it can be seen in its entirety here . In it, he stated that he believes that the tax rate for wealthy Americans (of income of $1 million to $10 million) should be at 30 percent; and 35 percent for income over $10 million. The editorial as well as a recently published book by Carol Loomis, Tap Dancing to Work: Warren Buffett on Practically Everything, 1966-2012: A Fortune Magazine Book, and recent events — including the impact of Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping — affecting the economy became the springboard of the discussion.
In the interview, conducted live in Studio 1A, Buffett discussed the economy and how he assesses it as an investor and weighed in on some timely issues including the fiscal cliff, as well as actions that President Barack Obama’s administration is taking to avoid the deadline as well as actions of Congress. Here’s an excerpt from the conversation:
Echoing a theme he has stressed often, Buffett downplayed the idea that higher taxes for the wealthy, as proposed by the Obama administration as part of a deal to resolve the “fiscal cliff,” would scare off critical investment for job creation. Republicans argue that raising taxes on people in higher tax brackets would choke off investment and slow the economy at a time when it can ill afford it.
Buffett disagrees. “No, and I think it would have a great effect on the morale of the middle class,” said Buffett, in the first of two live interviews with TODAY’s Matt Lauer. “They’ve had to watch guys like me pay below the rate by that paid by the people in my office.”
