In the previously taped sit-down interview, E.L. James, a suburban mother and former television producer, said of the book, which has just sold 2 million copies in a month, “This is my midlife crisis writ large, all my fantasies.”

she said she didn’t know why the book had caught on so quickly and that she was writing the book every day for two years in completing the manuscript. “I’m stunned by its popularity,” she said. The full trilogy of novels, she said, was inspired by the Twilight Saga.

In introducing the segment, Today Show anchor Matt Lauer noted that NBC’s sister company Universal has won the bidding war for the movie rights to the novel.
