Along with Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden, the First Lady has made numerous public appearances for the Joining Forces initiative to bring awareness to the challenges military families face and to encourage communities to do what they can to help them.

During the extended interview, Mrs. Obama talked about numerous topics from her occasional shopping trips — including the trip to Target, which was caught on camera and publicized — and the family dog, Bo Obama, as well as family life in the White House.

Amidst the joking around was a poignant moment in the conversation as Mrs. Obama reminisced about her parents and the values they had instilled; unconditional love and setting boundaries. She spoke about late father who persevered with his work despite being stricken with multiple sclerosis. She said, “We had rules, we had boundaries, but there wasn’t anything my dad wouldn’t do for us….don’t make me cry.” Recovering from her emotional moment, she said, “This isn’t Oprah! It’s supposed to be Letterman. What’s up? Where are the laughs?”

Letterman quipped, “Did somebody tell you this was Oprah? Is that why you’re here? Oh my, someone misled the first lady!”

She went on to talk about raising her two daughters, Sasha and Malia, in the White House while still trying to maintain the same environment and values of their life in Chicago.

She also talked about her work in encouraging the nation to pursue physical exercise and to make healthier food choices at meals, all as part of Let’s Move, which Letterman introduced as his concern for ‘fat children.’ Mrs. Obama pointed out that the emphasis is on health rather than weight. She also noted that children are spending too much time — upwards of seven to ten hours a day — in front of TV or playing video games. She went on to discuss the the problem of “food deserts” and the importance of making sure that families have access to fresh foods and fresh produce.
