The 12-member Super Committee co-chaired by Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) was to bring about a 2.6 percent reduction ($1.2 trillion) of the federal budget over 10 years, and was unable to do so. They released a written statement which read in part: “Despite our inability to bridge the committee’s significant differences, we end this process united in our belief that the nation’s fiscal crisis must be addressed and that we cannot leave it for the next generation to solve.”

The President said in part in his remarks: “There are still too many Republicans in Congress who have refused to listen to the voices of reason and compromise that are coming from outside of Washington.”
