During the brief interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, band members were asked about the success of their previous album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, which won three Grammy Awards and was the best selling album of 2008. They noted that with each album they have to start over and impress people again.
Chris Martin said of pressure with the new album, “We have to prove every time; we are asking people to spend money they’ve worked hard for. It doesn’t matter what happened in the past.”
Asked what the album title Mylo Xyloto means, he said, “It doesn’t mean anything, just means four English people trying to come up with something that has no association.”
The band performed at the recent Steve Jobs memorial service. Martin called Jobs a pioneer and someone who had helped them a lot. He said of the service, “It was a really heartfelt, beautiful ceremony.”
The band was recently profiled in an article at USAToday and discussed a range of topics including the new album and their musical milestones: Coldplay approaches ‘Mylo Xyloto’ as a clean slate.
