President Obama makes remarks on Haiti recovery efforts in Washington

Here are the Obama Haiti earthquake relief update speech video and transcript from Fri. Jan. 15, 2010. President Barack Obama delivered a third address regarding the progress towards delivering relief to the country in the aftermath of the Jan. 12th earthquake which struck the capital city, Port-au-Prince, and surrounding areas.

Obama said that the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson had arrived, along with helicopters to move food water and other supplies. He noted that food, water and medicine continue to arrive, with Brazil, Mexico, France, Colombia, Canada, the Dominican Republic and other countries contributing to the relief. He also said he would be meeting with former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush on Sat. Jan. 16. Both are involved in the earthquake relief efforts.

He went on to say he had spoken with Haitian President Rene Preval by phone, noting that “Like so many Haitians, President Preval himself has lost his home and his government is working under extraordinarily difficult conditions…” He characterized the conversation as “an emotional moment” and said the Preval had said, “From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the people of Haiti, thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Obama went on to note: “”The scale of devastation is extraordinary…The entire world stands with the government and the people of Haiti. So many people are in need of assistance.”

Obama again directed people looking for ways to help to visit the official WhiteHouse.gov Web site.
