Obama Terrorism, Airline Security, Intelligence Report Speech Video 1-7-10

Here are the Obama terrorism, airline security and intelligence report speech video and transcript from Jan. 7, 2010. President Barack Obama discussed the newly released review on intelligence failures and aviation security and the steps to be taken in the aftermath of the terrorist attempt on Christmas Day on Northwest Airlines flight 253 traveling from Amsterdam to Detroit, for which Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab of Nigeria has been indicted by a federal grand jury. The full video and transcript are at the end of the post.

The address on the security update was given at 4:30pm ET on Thurs. (Fri. Jan. 8, in some time zones) in the aftermath of the release of the declassified report — dubbed a “shock report” — which details some of the failures which enabled a nearly successful act of terrorism on Dec. 25, 2009.

Regarding the security lapses which lead to terrorist attempt, the President noted the “failure to connect the dots of intelligence” and a “failure to communicate and understand the intelligence we already had.” He then proceeded to outline a four point plan to improve the system, including how data is gathered and shared among intelligence agencies and the Dept. of Homeland Security, as well as changing criteria for placing individuals on terror watch lists and the no fly list.

While stressing that individuals and agencies would be held accountable at the highest level, he went on to say he was “less interested in passing out blame than learning from these mistakes.”

Obama added: “Ultimately the buck stops with me….when the system fails, it is my responsibility.” Additionally, he stressed, “We are at war. We are at war with Al-Qaeda.” He went on to say, “Now is not the time for partisanship, but for citizenship.” He reiterated that the country “would not succumb to a siege mentality.”
