U.S. President Obama receives Nobel Peace Prize

The acceptance of the prize with the Nobel Lecture, as the speech is properly termed, is not without controversy (a recent CNN poll shows only 19 percent of Americans believe the president deserves the prize), especially in light of the President’s recent announcement to send 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. According to Jeff Zeleny of the New York Times, Obama worked with speechwriters Ben Rhodes and Jon Favreau, after the announcement of the Afghanistan war strategy.

“There is one very pregnant question,” said David Axelrod, a senior adviser to Mr. Obama. “How do you reconcile your role as a commander in chief with your aspirations to promote a more peaceful world at a time of war? That’s a question that he’s going to explore in some detail.”

He is reported to have read the lecture of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was the 1906 Nobel Prize recipient. (President Woodrow Wilson, who received the prize in 1919 was unable to attend in Oslo due to illness and sent a telegram.) He is also said to have studied the lecture of the 1953 George C. Marshall, who was responsible for the Marshall Plan which helped rebuild Europe after World War II. as well as those lectures of the 1964 recipient, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the 1993 recipient former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.

Breaking with tradition, Obama will not conduct a press conference, nor will he have lunch with the king or dinner with the Nobel committee. Additionally, he will not attend the traditional concert presented in honor of the Nobel Laureate, which will be hosted by Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith and feature performances from Toby Keith and Wyclef Jean among others.
