Here is the Kris Allen Good Morning America video from Nov. 17, 2009 of his performance of Live Like We’re Dying, lead single of the season 8 American Idol’s self-titled debut album released that same day.
In an interview with MTV News, he discussed the album; in particular, the version of Heartless, the Kanye West cover, that appears on the album, which was produced by Salaam Remi, which purposefully references the ethereal sound of In the Air Tonight, the 1981 hit single by Phil Collins. Despite the critical acclaim the track has received, the singer-songwriter revealed his disappointment in it.
“It’s not that I didn’t want to put it on there, [it's just that] the version was a little bit different for me.”
And Allen didn’t stop there, saying that the whole “In the Air Tonight” vibe was definitely Remi’s idea, and that, in his opinion, the album version of “Heartless” is a far different thing from the one he first debuted during his “Idol” days. And that’s not necessarily a good thing, according to the singer.
“That was definitely the producer’s feel for it. He wanted that in there.” Allen said about the Collins influence. “It was different for me, because it was a different song.”
