The forthcoming debut album, Pieces, which will be released on Universal Republic in the U.S. on Feb. 22, 2010, has been three years in the making, featuring production from Tysper, Mack and Grizzly who discovered the singer when he was just seventeen years old. Already becoming known for his emerging distinct musical style as well as his trademark red Afro, he was recently profiled by the Times Online and he discussed his involvement with the album.
“The producers sought me out for a collaborative project, not just as a singer to front their songs,” he insists. “They’re my musical mentors. I had never tried to write until I met them, but they encouraged me to contribute. We would sit and discuss my life and the sounds I liked, and the songs evolved naturally from there. Most are about me being a teenager, falling in love and having my heart broken. I would sing and they would play until the atmosphere felt right.”
Erik Hassle went on to reveal in the interview that growing up in an isolated area of Sweden contributed to his ambition to succeed in music. According to his official bio, as a teen, he moved to Stockholm where he pursued his music studies in school.
“Katrineholm wasn’t always the most boring town,” says Hassle. “It used to come second on the list. Then it moved up a place to No 1. What’s wrong with it? Mostly that there’s nothing to do, and little — how do you say it? — free environment. It’s not cool or smart. Even the buildings are boring.”
