Lady GaGa HRC National Dinner 10-10-09 Video, Photos Imagine Live Performance

Here are the Lady GaGa HRC National Dinner video and photos; she performed Imagine, the John Lennon classic at the Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009 Human Rights Campaign 13th Annual National Dinner, in Washington, DC, with some altered lyrics for the occasion. President Barack Obama who spoke at the dinner famously quipped, “It’s privilege to be here tonight to open for Lady Gaga. … I’ve made it.”

In remarks prefacing her performance, as MTV News reports, the pop star told the audience, noting the National Equality March which would take place the next day on Oct. 11: “You are inspiring a tremendous number of young people, and I know that tomorrow is going to be just as memorable as tonight was. And I promise to continue and to love and be loyal, to stand up for and to continue to challenge the world, for all of you. I’m not going to play one of my songs tonight because tonight is not about me, tonight is about you.”

She went on to alter some of the song’s lyrics to pay tribute to the memory of Matthew Shepard whose 1998 death has helped to galvanize the fight against homophobia, and to address the need for equality for all: “Imagine there’s no heaven/ It’s easy if you try/ No hell below us/ And only Matthew in the sky…People of the nation, are you listening?/ It isn’t equal if it’s sometimes/ I want a real democracy.”
