Jay-Z Oprah Video 9-24-09 [Full Interview]

2009 MTV Video Music Awards - After Party

Here is the full Jay-Z Oprah video of the legendary rapper and mogul’s September 24, 2009 interview on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The wide ranging and lively discussion covered a number of topics and included footage of Jay-Z taking Oprah on a tour of the Marcy Projects in the Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn neighborhood where he grew up.

Of life growing up in the projects, he said that helped him “with everything because you had to operate with the highest of integrity because it meant life and death for the most part.” The visit to his old neighborhood, including his grandmother’s house, was the setting for the O Magazine interview. The pair also paid a visit to his Rocawear corporate offices where he discussed the clothing line as viewers received a behind the scenes look at the designs, print ads and showrooms.
He stressed the importance having passion for what you do, acknowledging that it has been hard work, but that he loved it and the results. His Blueprint 3 album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and is still at the top of the chart for the second week. Now with eleven No. 1 debuts on the chart, he has surpassed the record previously held by Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most such chart topping debuts.

Additionally he discussed his role as a music mogul in launching the careers of music artists including Rihanna and Kanye West both of whom appear on the single Run this Town from his most recent album, Blueprint 3.

Regarding the Rihanna Chris Brown domestic violence incident, he said, “There’s a contention of young people who are going through the same things, and no one hears their voice. She can be their hero. Or she can choose not to grow from this.”

Oprah expressed her viewpoint opposing the N word in rap, noting that the two agreed to disagree “until death do us part.” Jay-Z for his part says that using the word takes the power of out it. Taking words out of the dictionary, he went on to explain, does not address the underlying issue of racism.

The interview took a turn towards levity as Jay-Z taught Oprah how to freestyle rap.
