In an interview with ArtistDirect.com, Jason DeRulo discussed his creative process.

Growing up, I listened to a lot of different kinds of music. It’s my thing to go into a record store and pick up anything that I’ve never heard before. I’ll pick up a random CD and listen to it—not for inspiration, but for education. I have a lot of influences, and they all really come through in my music. I try to reinvent myself on every track because nowadays people put CDs together where every song is simply a watered-down version of their single. I definitely didn’t want to be like that. I wanted to bring something new to the table. I wanted to make an album that takes you on a journey.
