Here is the Maxwell Ellen DeGeneres video from September 17, 2009 of the Grammy Award nominated R&B neo-soul singer’s performance of Pretty Wings on the daytime talk show. It is the lead single from his fourth studio album, BLACKsummer’snight, (also known as Black Summer’s Night), released earlier this year. It is first in eight years, which debuted at No. 1 both on the Billboard 200 and the Billboard R&B album chart. The single topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart during the summer.

The new album is part of a trilogy of albums. In an interview with the Arizona Republic, the singer-songwriter discussed the forthcoming albums, describing them:

“Black” is the moodier record. “Summers” is more the gospel thing, but with a little bit of Fela in there. I don’t like to give it up too much because all of a sudden, you start hearing your concepts in someone else’s record. But “Night” is more a ballad record. It’s all love songs.

He also said that the subsequent albums already been completed. He went on to clarify:

Yes. But I’ll probably do touch-ups just before they’re released. I can’t even play them or bring them to Sony because of the way things work now, the way things are leaked. That’s why a lot of the record was hand-delivered literally as it was going to press.
