The cover of the Foreigners 1984 international hit has been announced as the official single lead of the music superstar’s forthcoming 12th studio album, ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.’ which will be released on September 29, 2009. The previous single, Obsessed, is reportedly not the “real” official lead single.

The classic 1980s power ballad Foreigners’ I Want to Know What Love Is lyrics and music were written by founding member and multi-instrumentalist Mick Jones who co-produced the song with Alex Sadkin for the Foreigners album Agent Provocateur, released in 1984. The gospel-music-influenced song was recorded with backing vocals from New Jersey Mass Choir, Jennifer Holliday, and the Thompson Twins. It became the band’s biggest hit, topping charts in the U.K. and the U.S. as well as in several other countries. Additionally, the song is No. 476 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The original music video for the song can be seen on YouTube.

The new version recorded by Mariah Carey was produced by Christopher “Tricky” Stewart and James “Big Jim” Wright.
