Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney rocks up a storm for the Late Show With David Lettermen in New York

Here is the Paul McCartney Letterman video and photos of the music legend’s July 15, 2009 appearance on Late Show with David Letterman. The appearance was the first for McCartney in 45 years at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, where, in 1964, The Beatles made their U.S. television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show.

As the Paul McCartney Letterman video reveals, McCartney and his band performed on the marquee atop the Ed Sullivan Theater, which is located on Broadway between 53rd and 54th Streets. He played the Beatles hit single Get Back as well as Sing the Changes, a song from his most recent album, Electric Arguments which was released via the name of his new project The Fireman.

In total, he played a seven-song set, with additional songs, not seen on the Paul McCartney Letterman video broadcast (but seen below in videos shot by audience members), including Band on the Run, Back in the U.S.S.R., and Helter Skelter. [Source: Paul McCartney Returns to Ed Sullivan Theater ]

According to Guinness World Records Paul McCartney ranks as the most successful musician and composer in popular music history, with 60 gold discs and sales of 100 million singles. He has won 16 Grammy Awards; 12 as a member of The Beatles, and four with his band Wings. During the Paul McCartney David Letterman interview, the former Beatles member discussed a range of topics, reminiscing about the early years of the legendary band and their arrival in the U.S. as part of the 1960s British Invasion.

He discussed the Beatles TV appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show when he was 22 years old with band mates John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. That landmark television appearance included McCartney performing ‘Yesterday,’ in a solo rendition. He recounted a floor manager asking him beforehand if he were nervous and he told the man he wasn’t. The floor manager replied, “You should be. There’s 73 million people watching.”

He went on to discuss Michael Jackson and their musical collaborations during the 1980s which resulted in the hit singles “Say Say Say,” and “The Girl is Mine. He said: “It was great, you know, we had a great time. “It was Christmas, and I was at home and my phone rang and, you know, a little voice talked to me and I said, ‘Who’s this?’ You know, kind of guarding my privacy, private number. I said, ‘Who’s this?’ ‘It’s Michael.’ ‘Michael who?’ because I thought it was, you know, a little bit sort of dodgy, but anyway, he said ‘Michael Jackson’ and he said, ‘You want to make some hits?’ So I said, ‘Yeah, sure,’ so, you know, being of the hit-making variety.”

Paul McCartney is presently on tour, including three performances at Citi Field (formerly Shea Stadium). [see: Paul McCartney tour dates ]
