Leonard Nimoy is the originator of the iconic Spock character on the original Star Trek series which has become a part of pop culture. He reprises his role as Mr. Spock in the new J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movie. The highly anticipated movie was released in U.S. theaters on May 8, 2009. He is the only original cast member to appear in the movie, reprising his role as the iconic Mr. Spock.

The new movie is a prequel chronicling events of the lives of the iconic Star Trek characters when they were in Star Fleet Academy on Planet Earth, in San Francisco. James T. Kirk is portrayed by Chris Pine; Zachary Quinto portrays the young Spock. Rounding out the cast are Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Simon Pegg as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. The movie’s villain, Nero, a Romulan commander, is portrayed by Eric Bana. The movie has received critical acclaim; for instance, see: Star Trek Review

Star Trek 2009

Sitting alongside all of The View cohosts — Barbara Walters, Whoopie Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd — Leonard Nimoy said returning to Star Trek after 18 years “was like slipping into a warm bath.”

Regarding the J.J. Abrams movie, he said, “It’s a very, very big movie, in scale and scope and size.” He also noted that there is “personal, touching, emotional stuff” as well.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck asked What advice he might have given the actor Zachary Quinto who plays Spock in the prequel. Leonard Nimoy on The View said the he was an “”Extremely intelligent actor. Very well trained.” He noted that “here is an intelligence working” which he said he considered essential to the character.

Whoopie Goldberg asked him if he thought Gene Roddenbery would be happy with the new movie. Nimoy said he thought he would and added that Roddenbery told him it would be exciting to see someone else’s vision of the series.

Regarding J.J. Abrams, he said he was a “Great director, wonderful director” who had a “wonderful vehicle.” He said, “It’s like coming home.”

Joy Behar noted that Star Trek fans include President Barack Obama and Angelina Jolie. Leonard Nimoy said he met Obama before he became president, three years ago. He saw him at a luncheon in Los Angeles. He says that Obama gave him the Vulcan greeting as he approached him.

Leonard Nimoy’s wife Susan Nimoy was present in the audience; the couple has been married for twenty years. When asked if he were like Spock at home, Susan Nimoy nodded and said, “I’m devoted to making him scream, too.”

Whoopie Goldberg asked him about his book of photography, The Full Body Project, which was released in 2007; the book is comprised of photographs of large women, photographed without clothing.
