The Decemberists

Here is The Decemberists Colbert video. The Portland, Oregon indie rock band was interviewed and performed live The Wanting Comes in Waves on The Colbert Report on April 27, 2009 on Comedy Central. See video and lyrics here.

Preceding the live performance of ‘The Wanting Comes in Waves’ was an entertaining interview with The Decemberists’ frontman Colin Meloy and musician Chris Funk with host Stephen Colbert who playfully took issue with the title of The Decemberists’ fifth studio album, The Hazards of Love. “How about The Joys of Love? How about You’re Beautiful, Honey? That’ll move some plastic!” Colbert insisted.

The Decemberists went on to discuss the musical influences of the album which is a narrative, involving a shape shifting creature. The 17-song album which pieces together folk motifs from the Victorian era as well as from the British folk revival era. (For more on the album see: The Decemberists: Hazards of Love (Review)

The album features guest appearances from vocalists Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond) and Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Claire Kurzmann. Shara Worden joined the band in the live performance on The Colbert Report.

The Decemberists were among the first musical guests ever to appear on The Colbert Report in a memorable appearance which included guitarist Chris Funk and Stephen Colbert in a guitar-solo ShredDown, with Colbert injuring his fingers and having to be replaced by Peter Frampton. Also on the show that night as judges were Henry Kissinger, Anthony DeCurtis and Eliot Spitzer, who had to recuse himself. See: Decemberists Return to Colbert, but Will They Shred

The album, The Hazards of Love, was released in March 2009 and the group is set to tour in support of the album. See: The Decemberists Visit Colbert, Add Leg to Tour

The Wanting Comes in Waves Lyrics

Colin:

Mother I can hear your foot-fall now
Soft disturbance in the dead-fall how
It proceeds you like a black smoke pall
Still the wanting comes in waves
And you delivered me from danger then
Pulled my cradle from the reedy glen
Swore to save me from the world of men

Still the wanting comes in waves
In waves
And waves
And the wanting comes in waves
And the wanting comes in waves

And I want this night
And I want this night
Oh

Shara:

How I made you
I wrought you, I pulled you
From war I labored you
From cancer I cradled you
And now

This is how I am repaid
This is how I am repaid

Remember when I found you
The miseries that hounded you
And I gave you motion
Anointed with lotions
And now

This is how I am repaid
This is how I am repaid

Colin:

Mother hear this proposition right
Grant me freedom to enjoy this night
And I’ll return to you at break of light
For the wanting comes in waves
And waves
And waves
Still the wanting comes in waves
Still the wanting comes in waves
Still the wanting comes in waves
And you owe me life
And you owe me life

Shara:

And if I grant you this favor to hand you
Your life for the evening
I will retake by morning
And so
Consider it your debt repaid
Consider it your debt repaid
Repaid
Repaid
