Britain’s Got Talent Susan Boyle, the 47-year-old Scottish singer who has become an international star overnight, was interviewed and gave a live performance on the CBS Early Show on April 16, 2009 in a special appearance, ‘Susan Sings For America.’
The interview with co-hosts Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez was conducted via satellite from the singer’s home in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland.
The YouTube video of her astonishingly brilliant and emotionally poignant performance of I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables which was her Britain’s Got Talent audition, has gone viral, with more than 11 million views to date. See: Susan Boyle Video (Britain’s Got Talent)
In an interview, Susan Boyle talked about her sudden world fame which has been an eyeopener and a reminder of the fallacy and cruelty of judging people by their physical appearance. Such was the case with her audition on Britain’s Got Talent. Her singing astounded the initially derisive audience and the trio of dismissive judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan. What a contrast it was from the jeering laughter that awaited her when she said she wanted to emulate West End legend Elaine Paige to the unbridled cheering and standing ovation for her mesmerizing performance.
The Susan Boyle Britain’s Got Talent performance parallels that of Paul Potts, the mobile phone salesman and 2007 Britain’s Got Talent winner who has since achieved worldwide success with his debut album topping the charts in 13 countries. (You can see the Paul Potts video here on YouTube. )
Also appearing on the CBS Early Show was Broadway legend Patti LuPone who originated the role of ‘Fantine’ in ‘Les Miserables’ on Broadway in 1985 and as such, the first to ever sing ‘I Dreamed A Dream.’ (See: Stage Tube: ‘Boyle Wows LuPone!’ – CBS Early Show)
Patti LuPone spoke via telephone and praised Susan Boyle’s performance, saying it made her cry. ‘Susan, you got pluck, girl!’ LaPont said. She also discussed the technical difficulties of singing the emotionally intense ballad, which appears early in the musical. She went on to say that watching the Susan Boyle YouTube video was ‘powerful’ and ‘It me cry.” She said the singer had ’so much courage.’
In response to the rousing endorsement, Susan Boyle said, ‘That’ll do.’
