Watch recent Asher Roth video interviews and live performances and see photos and official tracklisting here for the rapper’s highly anticipated debut album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle set for release on April 20, 2009, a release date purposefully evoking the slang term, 420. The album features guest appearances from Cee-Lo of Gnarls Barkley, Jazze Pha, Keri Hilson, Busta Rhymes, Estelle and Chester French. It was produced by Oren Yoel with additional production from David Appleton, Mike Caren and Ben Allen, and others.
Asher Roth hails from the suburbs of Philadelphia and attended nearby West Chester University; which was the inspiration of his signature hit, ‘I Love College.’ He was recently profiled in a Wall Street Journal article which examines the unavoidable issue of race and hip hop music and Roth’s emergence as a major artist in an African-American created genre. Roth rarely escapes comparison to other white rappers, notably Detroit rapper Eminem.
“I’m classic white. I’m talking about yoga and yogurt covered in fruit,” says Mr. Roth, who also salts his lyrics with some references that couldn’t be aired uncut on television or radio. Without intending to, he says, he has spurred debate about rap’s identity issues. “It’s forcing people to talk and get a lot of things off their chest,” he says.

The rapper was also interviewed recently by MTV and he discussed the Asleep in the Bread Aisle album, track by track.
“It was very important to showcase the fact that over the last 23 years of my life that I have not just listened to hip-hop,” Roth explained. “People need to understand that people have iPod Shuffles nowadays. When you go through people’s iPods, it’s not just hip-hop, it’s not just jazz, it’s not just rock — there are all types of music.”
