David Holmes has been a Southwestern Airlines flight attendant for six months when he came up with the idea of turning the pre-flight safety check into a rap. He had to write down the lyrics and make sure they were in compliance with all of the F.A.A. regulations.
In an interview, he discussed the reaction of passengers.
“I didn’t know how they were going to react. And, I like to have fun at work, but then people starting getting off the plane and said to me, ‘That’s the first time I’ve ever listened to the emergency instructions.’”
One passenger recorded him on her cell phone camera and told him she was going to put the video on YouTube.
“I said ‘I dare you,’ and two days later, she did it,” Holmes said. “Two days after that, it was already 2,000 hits at the time.”
And the rest, as we say, is viral video history.
