The Michelle Obama Good Morning America interview on March 13, 2009 was her first since becoming First Lady. See full video and photos here.

The interview with ABC News GMA anchor Robin Roberts took place on Thursday afternoon, March 12 for broadcast the next morning. Notably the interview took place at Fort Bragg as Mrs. Obama was meeting and greeting military families. This has been a longstanding cause she has championed and thus not a surprise that Fort Bragg would be her first official trip outside of Washington DC.

Once Michelle Obama became apprised of the challenges military families face, with constant moving, economic struggles, she has brought prominence to their plight. She expressed her dismay over families of servicemen and servicewomen on food stamps and other government assistance. “It hurts. It hurts. These are people who are willing to send their loved ones off to, perhaps, give their lives — the ultimate sacrifice. But yet, they’re living back at home on food stamps. It’s not right, and it’s not where we should be as a nation.”

Of the President and what he brings towards solving the problems of the country, she said, “I wouldn’t want anybody but Barack Obama to be working at this time, because he is a focused, clear-thinking, rational man — and that’s what we need right now. I’m coming off of a boost of understanding all that our country is made of, the values, the men, the women, people who are looking for the silver lining, even in tough times.”

During her Fort Bragg visit, Michelle Obama also read to the children at the school.

“It was like she was reading to her children,” said Mattie White, a lead education technician at Fort Bragg.

While reading “The Cat in the Hat,” the first lady told the children she had two young daughters, and one tyke chimed in “I know Sasha.”

“You know, I just think, ‘How sweet.’ That’s the power of kids connecting with other kids,” the first lady said after the Fort Bragg child shouted out Sasha’s name. “I think that that’s, you know, been wonderful for the nation to have two little kids in the White House that they connect to.”

She also talked about home life, and how invaluable her mother, Marian Robinson, has been in helping her raise her daughters in the White House. She also shared what she does with her downtime.

“I must confess, sometimes I click on some non-important TV and just veg out. I’m usually asleep right after the kids go to be. I get up early and work out. That tends to be my relaxation. It happens in the morning.”

As Robin Roberts made note of the visible results of the First Lady’s diligent workouts, saying,’We see the workouts are doing very well for you.” Michelle Obama, joked, ‘Well, I covered up my arms up.’
