U2 performed on Late Show with David Letterman for the full week of March 2-6, 2009. See video and photos of all five performances here.

The legendary Irish rock band is the first musical act ever to perform for an entire week on Letterman. The performances are in support of their newly released 12th studio album ‘No Line on the Horizon.’ It is their first album in four years, since ‘How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.’ (The band also performed on March 6, 2009 live on Good Morning America at Fordham University in Bronx, New York.)

U2 has sold more than 145 million albums worldwide. The band has won 22 Grammy Awards, equaling the number of Grammys that music legend, Stevie Wonder, has won. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

As part of U2’s week in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg designated temporarily a section of West 53rd Street as ‘U2 Way’ in a special ceremony on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, with New York Council Speaker Christine Quinn, in attendance along with U2 band members Bono, Adam Clayton, The Edge, and Larry Mullen. In an interview with Rolling Stone, frontman Bono discussed the forthcoming tour. The band is planning some innovative stadium shows as part of a new U2 world tour. The band hopes to set ticket prices low and to have innovative staging that will include 360-degree seating around the stage set, which itself will be put closer to the center of the field than usual to maximize the number of fans who can attend the concerts.

“We want to play for each other as much as we want to play for the crowd this time,” Bono adds. “You just don’t know how long you will be going to be doing this. I just sat everyone down the other day, because some concerns about the tour had come up, and nobody wants to be away from their families. I just said, ‘This is an unbelievable and rare opportunity to be in this band and to play at this level. You don’t know what is around the corner, you don’t know if you will be up for it or the audience will be up for it. Right now, we are perfectly riding across those two thoughts and every single night should be the best night of your life. If not, then we are just the worst of those Seventies dinosaur bands that felt it was enough to just turn up and play and that people were lucky to be in their presence.’ ”
