First Lady Michelle Obama People Magazine cover February 2009

First Lady Michelle Obama graces the cover of People Magazine March 2009 and is featured in an interview and photo shoot. See photos and video here.

Article continues below.

In the interview, the First Lady revealed that the family will choose a rescue Portuguese Water dog for their daughters Sasha and Malia. The dog will arrive in the White House sometime in April.

Temperamentally they’re supposed to be pretty good,” she says of the breed that Sen. Ted Kennedy has also lobbied for (he has two Water dogs of his own). “From the size perspective, they’re sort of middle of the road – it’s not small, but it’s not a huge dog. And the folks that we know who own them have raved about them. So that’s where we’re leaning.”

The First Lady shared the entertaining conversation that has ensued regarding the exact date in April the dog will join the family.

“So Sasha says, ‘April 1st.’ I said, ‘April.’ She says, ‘April 1st.’ It’s, like, April!,” Mrs. Obama recalls. “Got to do it after spring break. You can’t get a new dog and then go away for a week.”

She also talked about home life in the White House. She said that she and her husband rise at 5:30 a.m. for their workouts, followed by the “mean waffles and grits,” White House chefs prepare for them.

“We have dinner as a family together every night, and Barack, when he’s not travelling, tucks the girls in,” “We haven’t had that time together for [years], so that explains a lot why we all feel so good in this space.” But, she adds of their 16-year union: “I don’t want anybody to think it’s that easy. It works because we really work at it. … We have a strong marriage, but it’s not perfect.”

Additionally, of note is Michelle Obama’s sleeveless dress which she choose for the People magazine cover. It is a design from the influential African-American New York designer Tracy Reese. She is known and appreciated for designing and making clothing for ‘real women.’ The price tag for the exquisite dress is a mere $395 and in looks and style it ranks easily with dresses priced in the thousands. You can see a large photo image of the dress at Mrs-O.org.

Tracy Reese launched her fashion line 11 years ago. She met the future First Lady at a fundraiser which she describes as “the best moment of 2008.” discussed how her meeting with Mrs. Obama and designing for her came about.

[Michelle Obama] gave me a great hug and said, ‘I need to be wearing your clothes.’ Then she gave me a concerned look like, ‘it’s not that easy.'”

Reese spent weeks working with Ikram Goldman, Michelle’s Chicago-based stylist.

“It’s a process. She’s on the go. Any wardrobe choices have to go through her team.”

In the end, Michelle selected the pink dress out of 8 to 10 pieces Reese personally customized for the shoot.

Reese thinks her high-profile client made the perfect choice.

“Even though she’s a strong woman she’s also very feminine and the lace brings out this side,” says the designer. “I love seeing her in this dress. She has such great arms and I think they’re shown off.”
