Michelle Obama Vogue Magazine Cover March 2009, Photos

First Lady Michelle Obama graces the cover of Vogue Magazine  March 2009.  Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz shot the cover and accompanying photo spread.  On the cover, the First Lady wears a sleeveless silk magenta dress by designer Jason Wu who has become internationally known as the designer of her Inaugural ball gown.

Vogue’s tradition of photographing each new first lady dates back to 1929, with First Lady Lou Hoover, wife of President Herbert Hoover, with only two exceptions; Bess Truman, who was not photographed, and Jacqueline Kennedy who opted for a drawing by René Bouche in lieu of a photograph.   The only other first lady to grace the cover was Hillary Clinton.

Andre Leon Talley, Vogue editor-at-large, wrote the cover story, “Michelle Obama, The First Lady the World Has Been Waiting for.” He is quoted as saying that he is a “passionate supporter” who “volunteered in the campaign trenches.”  Here are a few article excerpts.

Regarding settling in at the White House and looking after daughters Sasha and Malia.

“I’m going to try to take them to school every morning — as much as I can.  But there’s also a measure of independence. And obviously there will be times I won’t be able to drop them off at all. I like to be a presence in my kids’ school. I want to know the teacher; I want to know the other parents.”

Regarding her fashion choices.

“First and foremost, I wear what I love.  That’s what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion.”

Regarding the criticism she received for wearing a black cardigan over the black and red Narciso Rodriguez dress  at President Obama’s acceptance speech in Grant Park in Chicago, on election night.

“I’m not going to pretend that I don’t care about it.  But I also have to be very practical. In the end, someone will always not like what you wear. … I was cold; I needed that sweater!”

Photos were shot in January 2009 at Hay Adams Hotel in Washington, DC where the Obama family resided for two weeks prior to moving to Blair House and then the White House.
