The magazine cover story is “Secrets of a White House Mom: Michelle Obama’s keeping it real: Pottery Barn decor, no nanny, J. Crew fashion, romantic dinners. Inside the First Lady’s private world.”   The First Lady has said publicly that her first priority is taking care of her daughters and helping them to adjust to White House life.  She recently, spoke out, through her press secretary, against Ty Inc.’s exploitation of her daughters with their “Sweet Sasha” and “Marvelous Malia ” dolls, for instance.

A recent article in the Telegraph.co.uk takes an in-depth look what the new First Lady’s role might be.

Her task, says Boston University social scientist Professor Thomas Whalen, an author of books on the presidency, will be to beat her own path between first motherhood and a co-presidency.

“She’s going to exercise what I would call soft power,” says Professor Whalen. “She’s trying to steer a kind of middle course between a Jacqueline Kennedy, who put an emphasis on family, and a politically active Eleanor Roosevelt.”

Mrs Obama has made clear that she will have no public schedule while she helps her daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, acclimatise to the White House bubble. “Her primary focus this week is getting the kids settled,” says her spokeswoman, Katie McCormick Lelyveld. “She is focused entirely on getting unpacked.”

But in her first interview as First Lady on Wednesday, Mrs Obama said that she was excited about her new life “because I think there’s a lot that can be done with this platform”. She plans to take a lead on issues relating to military families and work-life balance for women. Her policy director, Jocelyn Frye, worked for a charity that championed equality at work.
