The movie is opening in limited release in L.A. for Academy Award consideration for Best Picture and Best Song, and will be in limited release in U.S. theaters in March 2009.

The movie is directed by Aaron Woodley and costars Adam Rothenberg, and Ethan Peck as brothers, Carter and Ellis, who go on a journey from New Mexico to find their estranged father in the hopes of saving Ellis, who was diagnosed with terminal leukemia. They meet up with Marah Carey’s character, Krystal, who is an aspiring singer. She leaves her abusive husband, (Lance Reddick) to join them on their journey.

Mariah says of her character in the movie, “I was very close to the story and in particular my character’s struggle, so it made it easier for me as a writer. I just began channeling Krystal’s pain and hope. The song is basically a three-act play and chronicles the evolution of Krystal. She begins by telling us where she started, like she lays in bed and wonders where she left herself. A lot of people go through that sort of thing. It’s kind of about empowerment.”
