Eleven-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys performed her hit single “Superwoman” with Grammy winning rapper Queen Latifah and legendary opera singer Kathleen Battle at the 2008 American Music Awards on November 23, 2008. The annual awards ceremony was broadcast live on ABC from Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
The blending of R&B, rap and classical styles created a dynamic and exciting live performance. Queen Latifah paid homage to President-Elect Barack Obama and gave a tribute to Jennifer Hudson and her family’s recent tragedy. Kathleen Battle, a trailblazer as an opera singer and recitalist specializing in the works of Handel and Mozart, displayed her showstopping coloratura. The song, which was the last performance of the evening, ended with a large screen image of future First Lady Michelle Obama.
“Superwoman” is the fourth single from Alicia Keys’ multiplatinum 2007 album As I Am, which has been re-released as As I Am: The Super Edition, with three new tracks and a second disc of Alicia Keys performing five of her greatest hits at the Coronet in London.
Alicia Keys won two awards for the album; it was chosen the favorite album in two categories: soul/R&B and pop/rock.
