Photos of Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming, eagerly awaited “Sherlock Holmes” movie have surfaced.  See the first set photos and a video interview with Robert Downey, Jr. and Guy Ritchie here. This is the latest of numerous screen recreations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic series and character, the detective Sherlock Holmes. Filming began in London in October 2008 and the movie will be released in 2009. Jude Law stars as Dr. John Watson and Rachel McAdams stars as Holmes’ love interest.

The movie will present Holmes as more adventurous and less formal than previous screen incarnations and Downey Jr. says he is excited to take on the new action-packed challenge, saying it promises to be “big and fun.”

He also reveals he’ll have a lot of intense fight scenes in the film, which he says should be no problem for him since he has been training in martial arts for the past five years.

This manifestation of “Sherlock Holmes” will also be a more authentic recreation of the character as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle envisioned him.

Most people see Holmes in securely buttoned down tweed, complete with deerstalker cap and pipe. But that image was invented by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s illustrator, Sidney Paget. His description on the page was a bit different: “His very person and appearance were such as to strike the most casual observer. In height he was rather over six feet,and so excessively lean that he seemed to be considerably taller. His eyes were sharp and piercing, save during those intervals of torpor to which I have alluded; and his thin, hawk-like nose gave his whole expression an air of alertness and decision. His chin, too, had the prominence and squareness which mark the man of determination. His hands were invariable blotted with ink and stained with chemicals, yet he was possessed of extraordinary delicacy of touch, as I frequently had occasion to observe when I watched him manipulating the fragile philosophical instruments.” He was also frequently described as “Bohemian” and would slip into a lethargic lifestyle between cases.

It will not be the first time the classic Sherlock Holmes has been recreated.  Glimpse the first 10 minutes of Basil Rathbone as Holmes in “Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror.”  Filmed in 1942 and set in the contemporaneous World War II, Holmes does his part to help defeat Nazi Germany.  (The remaining 6 parts of the movie are also on YouTube.)
