Republican Vice Presidential candidate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was interviewed by CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric on September 24, 2008. Interview questions ranged from foreign policy to the current economic crisis.

While Palin seemed to assert confidently that the U.S. faced another Great Depression if the proposed $700 billion Federal bailout of Wall Street is not approved, she was notably as clueless about Republican Presidential candidate Senator John McCain’s past record of supporting regulation of the economic markets as she was about the Bush Doctrine in her first major interview with ABC News anchor Charles Gibson. Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin said the U.S. may end up in a depression unless a solution is found to the current economic crisis.

“Unfortunately, that is the road America may find itself on,” Palin said in an interview aired today with CBS’s Katie Couric.

It isn’t necessary that the actual administration plan be approved, “but there has to be action taken, bipartisan effort - - Congress not pointing fingers at one another,” Palin said.

John McCain, the man at the top of the Republican ticket, didn’t go so far as to predict a depression in a separate interview with Couric.

“I don’t know if its exactly a depression” in the offing, McCain said. Still, “Every respected economist in this country is saying, `You better address this problem.”

As it stands now, Palin said she doubted she would support the $700 billion administration proposal promoted by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to calm financial markets.

“Unless there are amendments in Paulson’s proposal, really, I don’t believe that Americans are going to support this, and we will not support this,” Palin said.

Appearing on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, Palin briefly discussed McCain’s call for greater oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — the two beleaguered mortgage houses - as evidence that McCain doesn’t always shy from a firmer government role in the economy. But when pressed, she could not name an actual instance where McCain supported regulation.

“I’m just going to ask you one more time, not to belabor the point,” Couric said. “Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation.”

“I’ll try to find you some and I’ll bring them to you,” Palin responded.
