Tennis superstar Serena Williams won the 2008 U.S. Open on September 7, 2008.  On September 8, 2008 she made an appearance on The Today Show and on Regis & Kelly.  She also took part in a photo shoot at Times Square in New York City, displaying her trophy. With her victory, Serena Williams is once again ranked world No. 1.

Five years after completing the ‘Serena Slam’ by winning all four tennis Grand Slam titles back- to-back, Serena Williams targeted a new period of dominance following her victory at the U.S. Open yesterday.

“It doesn’t stop here,” Williams told a press conference after beating Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-4, 7-5 at the National Tennis Center in New York.

It was Williams’s first Grand Slam victory since the 2007 Australian Open and the ninth major championship of her career. The win also returned the 26-year-old Williams to the No. 1 ranking, five years and one month after the American last sat atop the list.

Williams, who lost July’s Wimbledon final to her elder sister Venus, is the sixth woman in tennis’s Open era to win at least nine Grand Slam singles titles, joining Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles.

“I want to get double digits,” Williams added. “I like that I’m at nine because I’m pushing for ten, and I feel like I can do it.”

I just think I’m more consistent now,” she said following her tense 6-4, 7-5 U.S. Open victory vs. Jelena Jankovic on Sunday night. “It wasn’t as big a shock as it was in Australia (when she won in 2007 ranked No. 81). That was one of the few times I went to a Grand Slam and didn’t expect to actually win the whole tournament.”

Curled up in a leather chair, Williams wore a cherry red Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress, gold metallic flats and a magenta shawl around her shoulders as she recounted the last 12 hours to a small group of reporters Monday afternoon in midtown Manhattan.

Content but subdued, Williams said she had slept just an hour after all the excitement of her ninth Grand Slam title and appearances earlier in the morning on Today and Live with Regis and Kelly. A photo shoot in Times Square had followed.
