Access Hollywood reporter Maria Menounos interviewed Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and their daughters, Malia and Sasha, on July 4, 2008 in Butte, Montana, where the Obamas celebrated the 4th of July holiday. This was the first interview the entire family has given. Maria Menounos made an appearance on the Today Show on July 9, 2008 and discussed the interview and showed highlights.

Barack Obama has expressed second thoughts on the interview.
Barack Obama said it was a mistake to allow his daughters to be interviewed extensively by “Access Hollywood,” and he will not allow it to happen again.
“I think that we got carried away in the moment,” the Illinois senator and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee told TODAY’s Matt Lauer Wednesday. “We were having a birthday party, and everybody was laughing. And suddenly this thing cropped up. I didn’t catch it quickly enough. I was surprised by the attention it received.”
The interview, which is being aired in four parts this week on “Access Hollywood,” took place last week in Butte, Mont. In it, Obama and his wife, Michelle, sit down with their daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, to talk about family life and what it’s like to be the daughters of a presidential candidate.

The Obama family with Maria Menounos
“Nobody expected them to open up so much,” says interviewer Maria Menounos, herself a star of shampoo commercials. “The girls took over this whole interview.”
It was mainly such fare as daddy’s shopping habits that dominated this family interview with wife Michelle and children Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7 — which is probably just the way that dad preferred it.

Yet, when the Today Show’s Matt Lauer today asked Obama on Capitol Hill if he is ‘trying to have it both ways” by shielding the girls in most places and letting them speak out on Access, the senator conceded this: “I think that we got carried away in the moment…. We wouldn’t do it again, and we wont be doing it again.”
