Jay-Z addressed the “controversy” over his headlining appearance at Glastonbury Festival in the opening moments of his brilliant performance at the festival on June 28, 2008.
His set opened with a video montage based around Noel Gallagher’s infamous exclamation ‘I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury’ with misappropriated soundbites from everyone from Barack Obama to Gordon Brown. Gallagher is usually remarkably astute, but he may live to regret that comment. In Jay-Z’s restrained public response, he said: ‘We don’t play guitars, Noel, but hip-hop has put in its work like any other form of music’. Striding out on stage to Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’, with a guitar slung round his neck, was a masterstroke.

Jay-Z’s performance was electrifying, crowd pleasing and historic, demonstrating (once and for all, one hopes) that hip hop is a music genre with proven international appeal. As the Observer notes,
In the end, the debate over the Glastonbury line-up was proved to be nonsense. Jay-Z, the first hip-hop artist to headline the festival, pulled it off. Was there ever any real doubt? He is the world’s greatest living rapper, has sold over 50 million records and hardly struggles with his confidence. He could have been talking about Glastonbury when he rapped ‘This ain’t a tall order, this is nothing to me’.

Earlier, ticket holders at the 150,000-strong event had suggested that Gallagher, 41, was out of touch and ‘did not know what he was talking about’. Many were excited to hear that Jay-Z, the first rapper to headline in the event’s 38-year history, planned to launch his set by broadcasting Gallagher’s comments.
‘Glastonbury is not just about white men with guitars,’ said Jess Carter, as she trudged through the thick, sticky mud left over from Friday’s heavy rain. Smiling as the sun finally came out, her friend Rohan Sethi, 17, said he expected the artist to put on the ‘best show ever.’
From the fields filled with back-to-back tents to those lined with stages, market stalls and bars, many felt the same way. ‘Jay-Z is not like your typical gangster rapper,’ argued Rupert Acton, 26, an aspiring hip-hop artist. ‘He is the best in the world.’
