The 10th Annual White Tie and Tiara Ball for the Elton John AIDS Foundation took place on June 26, 2008 at Sir Elton John and David Furnish’s Woodside home at Old Windsor.   As is always the case, the glamorous event was well attended by A-list celebrities.

It was hard to decide whose arrival caused the biggest stir? Ex-president Bill Clinton with daughter Chelsea, plus an entourage of security and bodyguards, or Hollywood star couples Will Smith and Jada Pinkett, and Denzil Washington and his wife, Pauletta, who were later presented with a surprise 25th wedding anniversary cake by the hosts.

Natalie Imbruglia, who arrived with a Tom Ford-tailored David Walliams, wore a black satin dress by Stella McCartney low-cut enough to reveal an astonishing cascade of Chopard sapphires, spinels and emeralds and Naomi Campbell, nestling closely to her mystery Russian boyfriend, was draped in enough diamonds to fund a general election.

After a dinner of Oscietra caviar, stone black bass and a tranche of chocolates wrapped in gold leaf, it was time for the most serious course on the menu: the auction.

Credit crunch. What credit crunch? Among the lots, a field trip to Africa with Sir Elton and David Furnish went for #pounds one million. An oil painting by Mark Quinn went for £900,000. A private photographic portrait sitting with Mario Testino raised £800,000, £200,000 ahead of a private dinner for six in New York with ex-President Bill Clinton.

In all, the auction raised £10 million for the Elton John Aids Foundation, bringing the total sum raised since the singer started his charity in 1992 to over £60 million.

“I can die a very happy man,” Sir Elton said.
