Women In Film’s 2008 Crystal Lucy Awards took place on June 17, 2008 at the International Ballroom at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.  Aisha Tyler was the host. Attendees included Jada Pinkett Smith, Cameron Diaz, Annette Bening, Eva Mendez, Nicole Richie, Holly Robinson-Peete, Meg Ryan, Debra Messing and Rumer Willis.

Salma Hayek was hailed for her efforts as executive producer of “Ugly Betty” at the Crystal Lucy Awards in Beverly Hills last night. The awards, which were established to honor women in film as a tribute to Lucille Ball.
Hayek told The Hollywood Reporter: “I wanted ['Ugly Betty'] to be different than anything I was seeing on television. I also wanted Latin people to feel excited and proud that there was something on television that sort of belonged to them, but I wanted the American audience not to feel alienated from it.”

Making up for a dearth of strong female roles in the movies, September’s The Women offers up a cast with nary a man on screen.

This comes as welcome news to Women in Film, a 35-year-old organization that hands out its Crystal and Lucy Awards each year to people who advance female involvement in filmmaking.

The Women stars Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett Smith, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Debi Mazar and Cloris Leachman, who gathered Tuesday evening to salute the film’s writer/director Diane English, recipient of the Crystal Award — 13 years after she completed the screenplay.
