Tavis Smiley interviewed Donna Summer on “The Tavis Smiley Show” on May 19, 2008. Donna Summer, in promoting her new album, “Crayons” (her first album with new material in 17 years), discussed both past and future. She reminisced about her early career years in Germany where she got her start, performing in musicals. She says she wants to relinquish the Disco Queen label, as it is too limiting. Jokingly, she says she now wants to be known as the Empress. Her new album, “Crayons” reflects her achievement as a versatile artist who defies categorization.

Dubbed the “Queen of Disco,” Donna Summer has enjoyed consistent chart success since the ’70s. She’s sold more than 100 million records and was the first female to have four #1 singles in a 12-month period. With “Love to Love You Baby,” she was also the first artist to create an extended-play song. The Grammy-winning songstress first sang in a gospel choir and turned a role in a German stage production into a launch pad for her career. The release of “Crayons” marks Summer’s first CD of new material in 17 years.
