A double bill of Jay Z and Mary J. Blige is a risk-free proposition: He’s among rap’s greatest stars; she’s been dubbed the Queen of Soul and Hip-Hop. They’ve both had No. 1 albums in the past few months — Jay Z’s “American Gangster” (Roc-A-Fella) and Ms. Blige’s “Growing Pains” (Matriarch) — which suggests they each have a loyal fan base that will turn out for their joint “Heart of the City” tour. It kicked off Saturday night to a not-quite-sold-out house here.
The contrast in their styles offers the audience variety and maybe a bit of artistic tension. Ms. Blige is a gifted vocalist whose talents easily translate to fiery R&B, gut-twisting blues, hip-hop and classy though not overly glossy pop. Jay Z can’t sing a whit, but he features rapid-fire rap and cutting-edge beats enriched by sophisticated, textured arrangements. (More.)
